One tip given at my pre surgery class was for after surgery for those who had a mastectomy and had drains. It was to get a housecoat (bathrobe) with pockets in front and cut a hole in the back of the pockets so the drains could sit in the pockets. I did not have to deal with this, but it certainly makes sense that it would be easier to move around if one does not have to worry about the drains all of the time. I believe there are places that make robes for this purpose, but an inexpensive housecoat would work just as well. Also, I don't know what the rules are about set belts in cars, but in the US one must wear a lap and shoulder belt. A small very soft pillow to put under the seat belt was a big help.

@Dr. Sumit_Shah: she has been detected with a 7cm tumour and surgery is on 22nd. Will they remove the fulll breast or something else. Also, reports are showing there is another cist in other breast also. Although it is small and doctors are saying that this one has no cacerous growth...what should we do for that?

a 7 cm tumour takes her to a minimum stage 3A. It is likely that they are going to remove the full breast. Your doctor will answer that question better, as to what is the plan. If your maasi desires breast conservation, that is also possible, by giving chemotherapy first; the size of the tumour reduces in more than 80% patients and we then do a Breast Conserving Surgery. The choice is yours.

Ignore the cyst in the other breast. Do not worry about it.

@Pkenn, very aptly and correctly said.

Also, it is always better, that she learns shoulder exercises before she goes for surgery. And starts doing them right from day 2 of surgery. So her shoulder movements are maintained

Hi Prakriti - take guidance from Dr Sumeet for the Port. As during chemo given thro veins was very tough. And though after a month also her hand is swollen & blisters still on the hand. Veins through which chemo is given is still prickling & burning. Better you ask for the Port

I agree with kontak, it is worthwhile putting in a PORT as well. Anyways, I guess, your aunt must have got operated today by now. Let us know how did the surgery go. And if you are faced with any problem, we all are here to help you and guide you.

Hi prakriti

tell ur masiji to take lots of water because the medicines as pain killers and antibiotics will create acidity and water will help to over come this. Also tell her to take high protien diet which will help to recover soon.

As dr. sumeet told shoulder exercises are also very important. initially i used to do only once or twice for few days but increased slowly.

Take care and keep informing
