Hello, has anyone had gamma ray treatment because of bleed on brain.

My bleed was September 21, I have lost all confidence and cry alot. Doctors say o need Gamma ray treatment to stop further bleeding.

I'm scared

Plrase don't be frightened. Gamma ray treatment is very successful in my experience and as reported in research articles. I had it last September for cancer deposits in the brain.

I was told that the worst part was fitting the frame. However, for me, I found the worst part was being bored whilst lying on the table having the treatment. It took an hour and a half but it was entirely painless.

The way I dealt with preparing for the fitting of the frame was to 'walk' myself through the process in my mind several times.

My daughter took me to the hospital and picked me up later. That was because of the covid rules. You may be able to have someone with you if you ask.

On the day I waited in a room with a few isotherm having treatment. I had my scan then straight onto fitting the mask. Then back to the waiting room to wait my turn for treatment. There we all sat chatting with frames on our heads! Quite a funny sight.

The day after treatment I went to a garden centre and treated myself to lunch.

Side effects were sharp ad hoc pains in my head as nerve ends started healing and fatigue which lasted several months.

From your message It seems that if you do nothing it carries a risk of the bleed recurring. Did the consultant tell you how likely that might be?

At the end of the day, the decision is yours.

Oh by the way, I have a brain aneurysm. There's low risk of it bursting causing a bleed. I used to worry about that no longer.

I hope this helpful.

Happy to answer any questions

Best wishes xx

I can't lie, yes it did but not as much as I'd imagined it to be. I held a nurses hand. The pain lasts for about 5 minutes so I just kept saying to myself it'll be over in a few minutes.

Some people have a head mold instead of a frame. I've had one of those before. They don't hurt.

The consultant can tell you what will be used.

I have had Gamma ray treatment it was OK. The frame was far worse they took it off twice to refit. I found the whole experience tiring I was in hospital 7.45am and left 5.20pm go from one thing to another. Alot of waiting around. But I had a nurse with me most of the day.

I had the frame too though it didn't need readjusting. I was pleased to sit with 4 other patients going through the same thing. We chatted about our experiences which filled the time. There was also a nurse on hand in the waiting room to answer our questions or make hot drinks for us! I was pleased it was all done in a day. I went into hospital at 7am and was ready to go home before 3pm despite being the last to be treated. I was treated at Bristol Gamma Unit.
