Severe Pain Behind Eye

Hello, my name is Jen and I am a 21 year old female. For the past four and a half months, I have been experiencing severe pain behind my right eye, above my right eye and in my right temple. It feels like a pressure with a ripping/piercing pain intermittently. It came on suddenly and has nearly been constant. I never experienced headaches or eye pain prior to this. I have had my eyes tested thoroughly and they’re deemed as fine. My ENT GP also referred me for an MRI scan and an MRA scan with contrast. This came back clear. I am worried out of my mind that a small brain aneurysm has been missed and I can’t cope anymore.y half sister had two brain haemorrhage in her mid to late 30’s so I’m worried it’ll happen to me as well.

I do suffer with health anxiety as well at a high level. However, because of this and my clear MRA scan, my GP won’t help anymore. I am truly convinced that this is a brain aneurysm.

There's no way MRA would have missed it. Mine was discovered and surgeon estimates it at 1.9mm. Tiny. I luckily just need to get it monitored annually bec its v low risk.

In my case MRA had spot on my Cavernous ICA they were unsure was anyeurism so i then had CTA. Even if they were suspicious of anyth on your MRA they would've done more tests.

If I'd had the scans done yrs ago the anyeurism likely wouldn't even have shown up!! I think 2mm is circa minimum they find nowadays.

Funnily i too had severe pain behind eye couple years ago. I did the trips AE eye specialist and scans (only MRI not MRA). It was all clear. Eventually it cleared. You could simply have sinus issue that will resolve in time. Or referred pain from neck to front head.

I too have health anxiety (forever) and even tho i had this diagnosis I somehow am doing ok with it!!! Panic initally of course but I trust my docs.

I was told no way it was linked to anyeurism bec its far too small to create any symptoms. I think it was likely bad sinus.

I totally understand your anxiety especially as your sister had brain haemorrages.

It seems that you need more reassurance. How about asking to be referred for a second opinion? Another negative mri should give you that.

I agree with the response that said it wouldnt have been missed on mri.

My suggestion to get a second opinion (from another hospital) was to help reduce your anxiety over potential aneurysm.

Alternatively you could ask for an annual mri due to your family history.

Hi Jen,

An angiogram is pretty invasive and carries a small risk of stroke, so I am not sure it is worth doing if your MRI was clear (to say nothing about what worrying about that stroke risk would do to your health anxiety!).

I do however wonder if your eye pain could somehow be migraine related (for me it is one of the most consistent symptom).

The fact that it is constant makes me think maybe not, but I have seen on other forums people with daily migraines so is it worth ruling it out?

They won’t av missed owt, don’t think they will do an angiogram unless they find a reason to do one, mine was to work out the best way to fix my anyeursms x

I did av pain in my eyes n temple for about a year before my anyeursms were found, even threw myself to floor on my landing the pain was that sudden n bad one night as I was about to go down stairs, all u could see was big blue bubbles in my eyes n crawled into my bed n thought I was going to die, I knew my phone was on bed but I could not find it n could not lift my head long enough to look properly n cried out in pain all night n dived to window to open it n shouted help, I wanted to be heard so someone could get me an ambulance but nobody heard me, I must av fallen asleep but when I woke up the pain was still there but the bubbles had gone so I rang a taxi n went to hospital, they took blood urine Checked heart n blood pressure n kept me in all day for observation then sent me home with painkillers n nothing showing up in any tests, 6 months later I had a seizure n found out I had two brain anyeursms that needed surgery, they didn’t think the seizure was anything to do with anyeursms n sent me home n told me if I get a thunder clap headache ring 999 I said what’s a thunder clap headache they said the worst pain in ur head uv ever had, I said I had that 6 months ago, n I’ll still say that night that was the start of anyeursms but they djnt do brain scan so didn’t see it, n it also turned out the seizure was because of the 18mm anyearsysm x
