Hi. I had a SAH on the 12th of December 2013 , where I was rushed to derriford hospital plymouth and had coiling the next morning. I have been having MRI scans every year since.
I recently went for a scan last week on the 26th of feb 2018. I came home from work yesterday to find 2 letters from my neurologist explaining that the recent scan it shows the small remnant at the base of the aneurysm has increased slightly over the last 12 months. In view of this, they are saying one option would be to consider putting more coils into the aneurysm.
On the other letter is said appointment for the 19th of March 2018. To meet the neurologist and discuss options.
Also, me and my partner are trying to conceive, what happens if I need the operation done and I’m pregnant? I have so many questions surrounding this and I’m extremely worried! I’m now praying for a period! Whereas two days ago I was praying I’m pregnant. Obviously if I’m not then all the baby stuff will be put on hold! Does anaesthetic affect your baby? I may be jumping the gun here though and may not be pregnant it’s too early to tell but I’m just thinking of every possibility and it’s driving me nuts.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks again.

I can totally understand how youre feeling. It's like all was well and now someone has thrown a grenade (new information ) into your life which could change your plans.
So... If you have conceived... how wonderful. ...a few questions
Do you have any evidence anaesthetic is bad for an unborn child? Surgeons must have to operate on pregnant women all the time.
Also, would you need general anaesthetic? I think they can do coiling without putting you under.
Whether you postpone your plans only you can decide but I wouldn't worry if you have conceived... be happy!
I suppose it is normal to panics at something your unsure about at first!
No I don’t have any evidence that anaesthetic is bad for unborn babies but you know what Google’s like. Self diagnosing etc.... can send you doolally !
I think it is definitely general anaesthetic for recoiling but not 100% sure. I know between now and my appointment it’s going to give me enough time to write down all the questions I have regarding the surgery and recovery as I also am a self employed dog walker and started my own business in Nov 17 🤷🏼♀️ thanks for your reply Anders. Much love Leah
If you recoiling is recommended you won't be as ill as you were when you first had it because the aneurysm won't have ruptured, so no blood in the wrong place. Stay positive
I'm interested to hear you've been having annual MRI scans since your SAH. I had mine in 2015 and the only follow up I had was an angiogram which showed all was well. However, last month I suffered a seizure which they think may be secondary to the SAH, Maybe if I'd had annual MRIs they may have spotted it. Good luck with your recovery. BTW I spent a couple of months in Bristol BIRU post coiling and have nothing but praise for them.
Oh dear Mikey48, were there any specific reasons for you not to have annual MRIs? I thought it was protocol that this happened?
How are you now?
Thank you I’ll keep you all posted.
I have brilliantly amazing family and friends supporting me but it’s not the same trying to talk to them and expecting them to know how I’m feeling, this is helping me a lot. So thanks for everyone’s reply’s. Keep them coming!
Hi, thanks for your reply. It's great that you have such support from your family but it's difficult fir them to really understand, isn't it? As for me, no mention was ever made of annual MRI scans and as Isaid, all I had was a follow up angiogram when it wss declared that whoever had done the coiling had done a good job. I was put on aspirin for life for blood thinning and that was about it. However, as I mentioned previously, 6 weeks ago I hsd a seizure and was hospitalised fir a few days. Initial diagnosis was "likely secondary to sub arachnoid " plus I have a Neurology appointment on 20 March. If seizures occur after SAH it's usually within the first few months so 3 years down the line does seem a bit odd. At least tablets are keeping me seizure -free. All the best to you.
I hink the key thing here is that you have an appointment to discuss options. One option might be wait and watch for another 12 months, during which time you can go to full term of a (carefully monitored) pregnancy, deliver (although risks in natural birth around BP and the sheer physicality of labour would be worth asking questions of a neurologist about) and then consider the way forward from there.
Or you might wish to have all this settled before you have a baby - that next generation in your life does complicate things beyond belief - you get into the territory of needing wills, to have made agreements about care etc. should anything not go according to plan.
Much of this will be down to you and what you feel is the best toute. Your docs can tell you the options and the risks - but the decision will be yours and yours alone, unless your annie is seriously misbehaving. So take your time to think it through and ask as many questions as you need to.
