You will find lots of information in this link: theros.org.uk/information-a... You can also call their helpline and speak with a nurse should you wish to do so. The lines are busy so do keep trying. The Helpline is open Monday to Friday between 9am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5.00pm. Get in touch by calling 0808 800 0035 or emailing nurses@theros.org.uk
There's information on all the bisphosphonates here, all the ones ending in "onate": theros.org.uk/information-a.... In simple terms, bisphosphonates interrupt the bone cycle, slowing or stopping the breakdown of old bone, which in turn stops or prevents new bone from forming. This means that in the long run bone bone quality gets poorer, despite bone density increasing. They do reduce fracture risk in the short term, but only by 50%, meaning that around 50 out of 100 people who would have fractured without the medication still fracture despite taking it. You also need to bear in mind that most people won't fracture, even without medication. For example, if your fracture risk is 10%, that means that only 10 people in 100 with the same fracture risk will fracture in the next 10 years, 90 of them won't. There's a good explanation in this NICE patient decision aid: nice.org.uk/guidance/ta464/.... If you have a high fracture risk, taking a bisphosphonate to halve the risk might be something you consider worthwhile, particularly if you've already had a fragility fracture (from little or no impact).
I’m on allendronic acid I’ve had bilateral fractures of L5/s1 and don’t want that to happen again as my spine is fused with cage and now upper levels are getting same pain so I’m worried.
Take care

Hi Houselover120 ,
Just wanted to wish you a warm welcome to our community As other members have very kindly mentioned, we have lots of information about osteoporosis medicines on our website that might feel helpful to use at this time: theros.org.uk/information-a...
Hoping you can continue to connect with others in our community as it can make such a difference to be around others who understand what we're going through on our health journeys
Wishing you the very best,
