I was diagnosed with osteopaenia at 41 after a wrist fracture requiring surgery. Started calcium and Vit D and re scanned 2 years later and was told my bone density was OK. I remained very active until last September when at 63 I fell and broke my hip. A dexa scan showed osteopaenia.. With a history of a fragility fracture, family history, and confirmed osteopaenia I was recommended IV zoledronate . I have had the first dose with no ill effects. I aim to become active again. On a side note I asked for a repeat dexa scan at the time of my menopause. I didn't get one and perhaps that would have been useful but who knows ?

I was diagnosed at 49 due to early menopause when I was offered a scan. I haven't broken any bones and am waiting for my second scan which I hope will be offered this year somewhere time. I've started building muscle (which helps with bone strength) using small weights, I eat fresh, get lots of exercise and am careful not to fall. I increased the calcium in my diet and take Vitabiotics Immunace which is a really good multivitamin. I couldn't get on with the alendronic acid so I am curious to see what my second DEXA scan will show

You're fortunate, my periods stopped dead at 40 having started at 9 other to check that I wasn't pregnant I had no symptoms of the change whatsoever so hadn't gone back to him. How I regret it now, maybe if I had HRT I'd be in better shape than I am now, although I appreciate that not having symptoms meant that in my 40s and early 50s I was absolutely fine and really enjoyed life, the only time I needed the Dr was for LS I know we're not meant to think if only, it's a non productive pathway but, .......

If only!!

My perimenopause started at 40 and everything was done by 44. I tried HRT but gave up too soon, I wish I'd been better informed. I was advised at 47 to have a DEXA scan but due to the pandemic it was 2 years before I got one. Unusual for you to have no symptoms so that must have been quite a surprise. I think there should be mandatory scanning of all women in menopause so that we can all make lifestyle changes as soon as possible. This forum is extremely good, I check it every day, it's good for us all to talk

Yes, although people are sympathetic there's not the same empathy you get with someone who's facing the same thing xx

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 28 but I refused treatment for years till I fell out of bed in hospital and broke all my ribs then I didn’t have a choice as I will never forget the pain I couldn’t leave the house for 8 months. I have a long history of bowel disease and functional issues so I was offered IV zolendronic acid I had two infusions but then my bowel issues took over and I have had to have multiple surgeries and now have an ileostomy so I haven’t had any more infusions due to the iv having mannitol in it which gives me crazy toilet issues so at the moment I’m not sure where I stand on the osteoporosis journey my last DEXA scan showed the spine had gone from osteoporosis to osteopenia but my hips were still very bad osteoporosis xx

I was diagnosed at 47 with osteoporosis (now 64) after early menopause and paying for a private DEXA. On HRT till 50, then Alendronic tablets for 2 years but bone density decreased further so switched to Denosumab injections for 7 years. They improved DEXA score but still had osteoporosis.

Two year drug holiday and then repeat DEXA, bone density the worst it had ever been so put on Zolondronic annual infusion. Had 2 rounds of that so far, next one in September and hoping for another DEXA then.

No fractures fortunately.

You are lucky you had no fractures on drug holiday

That's interesting, so HRT wasn't the magic spot!!That settles me somewhat.

I was diagnosed in June 2024. In February I had a very nasty fracture to my right ankle which required ankle surgery. Now have a steel screw in ankle & titanium plate in lower right leg! This was a low impact fracture - foot slipped off last step. I phoned my GP because I was taking Chewable Adcal D3 which I hated the taste of - tastes chalky! Due to this I wanted it to be changed to different version of Adcal D3. I am now taking Adcal D3 Dissolvable instead which tastes a lot better. At the appointment with a GP he thought that it was very nasty fracture for some one my age! He thoiught that my ankle shouldn't of broken or if it did only a minor fracture. Due to this & that I stopped having periods & that I take epilepsy medications - whickh are known to adversely affecct how the body absorbs vitamin D which helps the body to absorb calcuim he sent me for a DEXA Scan. The results of the DEXA Scan showed that I have osteoporosis! I now take Alendronic Acid once a week. I believe I'll have another DEXA Scan in 5yrs time!

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my spine at the age of 54. I tried Aledronic Acid and had severe flu like symptoms after 12 hours. I then started Risedronate which initially suited me however after 3 months into the treatment my hairdresser highlighted that I was losing my hair which I attributed to the medication. This side effect was not on the patient medication sheet however when I looked in the bnf, (medication book that doctors and pharmacist use), it was listed as a side effect so I stopped taking medication. I purchased a set of weights and follow u t u tube videos of weight bearing exercises and eat home made natto three times a week to ensure adequate Vitamin K intake I am careful not to overdo it with the exercise and hope to stabilise the condition, only time will tell when I have the next Dexa scan in two years. My sister reversed her osteopenia using aledronic acid, so it suited her. Hope this info helps.
