I would discuss this with my doctor if I was suffering with nausea and vomiting. Perhaps you could inject terrosa/forteo every other day or perhaps eat a little piece of bread before injecting....... Really think you should discuss this with your doctor.
The UK patient information leaflet for teriparatide (also known as Forsteo) says:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before or while using FORSTEO:
• if you have continuing nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy, or muscle weakness. These may be signs there is too much calcium in your blood
Thanks. Will chat to the gp
I am really sorry to hear of the side effects you are having.
I am equally sorry that my honest answer will not be what you want to hear right now.
I had constant nausea for the whole of the time I had the treatment.
I can only describe it as lasting from the minute I opened my eyes in a morning to closing them in an evening.
As the day wore on it would get worse and by early evening I just wanted to crawl into bed.
It took all my energy and in the end I could not face injecting myself so my husband did it for me.
I really do not know looking back how I stuck it out other than the fact I had one fracture and was terrified of having another.
I now have 5 fractures so for me looking back I feel it took another 2 years of my life for nothing.
I am sensitve to meds and do not tolerate the bone treatments well.
I really hope in your case the side effects lessen.
It must be a common side effect as the nurse told me nausea and sickeness are the 2 main reasons people discontinue the treatment.
I am sorry I have answered you in a way, ( do not want it to cloud your jugement) but if it were me then I would be wanting an honest answer.
Again I hope your symtoms ease quickly.
Thanks. Really appreciate your reply. I'm hoping things improve. Using primperan to keep the nausea at bay. Finding that too much dairy makes things worse
Sunseaandsand - No need to apologize..you're just being honest and she needs to know this so she can make an informed decision. Her doctor will simply tell her that she should be patient and give it time and that the symptoms will go away. I hate all these awful bone meds...I won't take any of them and I have osteoporosis..there are different ways to deal with it...take care...
Hello Sartalejo,
Sorry to read you are having problems.
I've just finished the two year course of Forsteo, the first two week I had nausea feeling of sickeness and dizziness that lasted for 6 hours after each injection.
I contacted the hospital after about a week; had blood tests, they showed I had too much calcium so told to reduced my calcium tablet to every other day, in the main that and drinking lots of water helped as I realised I had constipation from the drug. I had occasional nausea after that so the consultant suggested injecting at night. I had been doing it every morning, the change had to be managed by slowly altering the time of injection i.e. one hour latter every day, so if you consider doing that do check first if this is okay and the same with the brand terrosa.
I am pleased I had the treatment as I have not had any fractures since and mid way through scan showed good results.
I do hope you are able to get something sorted out fairly soon.
Best Wishes
Posy White
One thing which appears to be true for teriparatide is after the two year course you may need to take another drug as the effects wear off. They are not like that seen with denosumab (Prolia) where in some cases there is a very rapid loss of bone density if discontinued, but the bone density gained while on teriparatide will gradually be lost.
Whether or not you continue with this or another drug (please, NOT Prolia or its new sister Evenity) You could seriously consider following the natural regimen that many of have found helpful. You can read my story, a bit dated now, but it works for me: healthunlocked.com/pmrgcauk...
The only side effect will be better overall health!
Sorry to hear about the nausea and vomiting. I’m in my third month of Terrosa with no discernible side effects at all. Sounds like a good idea to get your calcium levels checked. Are you taking any supplements? I was advised to take 800mcg vitamin D but not given any info about calcium. I’m taking a supplement because I’m largely vegan but I’m monitoring for signs of hypercalcaemia which is known to happen sometimes with teriparatide.
Hi, I started Terrosa 2 months ago, just going into 3 months now... I'm feeling pretty rough the last few weeks and after reading comments on here I can see that lots of people have had some side effects... I didn't link it to the pen as it has only started the last few weeks.. Think I will be calling the specialist tomorrow and possibly stopping it.. I had anaphylactic to A.A which was bad. (It's on my story).. stayed drug free after A.A for just over a year... Then started Terrosa in Nov 2020..
I have 4 old fractures to my thoracic spine and 3 to my ribs...
I will be 50 this year so still have many years ahead I hope...
😊
