Eastleigh Council launch campaign to improve air quality.

A new campaign is being launched this winter to improve air quality.

The aim is to tackle the problem of wood burning in homes across the region, which can affect people with breathing difficulties like asthma.

As the weather changes and the temperature drops, more people are lighting wood burning stoves in their house according to Eastleigh Borough Council.

The council say this can pollute the air and with coronavirus still circulating “that’s not something anyone wants on their conscience while they are trying to relax”.

As a result it has now teamed up with three nearby local authorities, Southampton, Winchester and the New Forest as part of the campaign.

The project offers residents information and advice on household burning, asking them to reduce the amount of burning they do, and to use cleaner fuels and more efficient appliances to help improve people’s overall health.

The campaign is backed by an Air Quality Grant worth £60,100 from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which will fund the project for the next two years.

Well, a token start to putting an end to this scourge. Unfortunately reading the comments, it seems that it is going to take a lot more work than just leaflets, that will just end up being thrown on the fires. Legislation and enforcement might be the only solution. Perhaps electricity might end up being cheaper if Boris' vision of his "Wind Arabia" comes to fruition.

It seems to be a fashion fad. I wish the estate agents would push info on how bad these are for your health and encourage builders not to put them into new homes. I fear it would fall on deaf ears though x

Burning the lungs of the planet, to pollute the air with 2.5 pm to cause permanent damage to human (and animal) lungs. Absolutely crazy, making zero sense. The burning of rainforests are being decried at the same time as they throw another log onto their fire!

Hi again! OMG this is one of my most hated things in recent years ever since every DIY store sells these blinking woodburners. I cant walk past a house that i know stinks of that smell and all i seem to do is find fault with this or that but its all backed by research and personal experience. Wood burners may look lovely if you sit and gaze into a small door to see the logs burning. Sad, so very sad. NOT as sad as the air polution and polution that is not from a huge industrial estate but from perhaps our neighbours etc. I'm 🙏 praying that the Government will pass a law to do away with them but as much as i 🙏, i can't see any action for the "save our air" campaign ☹️☹️ ☹️😪.🐿🌈

Yeah, we had one in the house we moved to four years ago. I have red and orange lights in it and it looks lovely when they are lit up, and fume free too. The fumes are everywhere outdoors in our town - every house seems to have one.

It is the same here too, I have had to modify my behaviour because of it. I take the rubbish down to the wheelie bins first thing in the morning now before the evil things get fired up. It is much to far to be able to hold my breath whilst I do it.

Oh good on you @O2Trees, good on you. I can imagine with coloured lights instead of wood burning away, it looks wonderful. You may have set an example here. Maybe a lucrative business venture? 😂 ..... 🐿🌈
