Hi

Amoxicillin covers a wider spectrum of bugs, it’s a good first defence while awaiting for sputum results. Which will give you more specific treatment.

Doxycycline is a similar antibiotic.

Hi I have been on doxycyline couple of times and the other ones and both have not worked on me

I can't take penicillan as am allergic to it but fortunately Doxy work well for me. I find though that the thromycin ab's don't work on me so it's a just as well I have one that does. x

Amoxicillan? Is that how you spell it? 6 prednisone x 2 days, 4 x 2, 2 x 2. Amoxi, 3 x day, frumesode 1 x 40mg day, plus all the other meds. Wow!! After the year l just had, all I wanted was to be able to move on this year, spent 6 days in the hospital again already with swelling knees down, feet as well, for 3 weeks, told consultants it's their fault l am in there, if they bothered to {l don't know} consult with me, sarcasm intended, l would be able to take better care of myself.

Amoxacillin stopped working for me so Consultant changed to Azithromycin three times a week and clithromycin for flare ups . Seem to work well, can't take Doxycycline as makes me very sick 15mins after taking.

I am taking doxy at the moment and it's hell to get down - I have to keep drinking pints and pints of water otherwise I vomit. As long as I keep drinking for half an hour and then eat it is okay - what a palaver!

I have never had anything lower than 500mg, I think the difference was the C, it seemed to be a different type of antibiotic . I now take doxycycline but dont think they are strong enough or maybe the wrong type of antibiotic for the infection I had x

It was probably amoxicillin+clavulanic acid. It works well if you've had a lifetime of being given the basic amoxicillin and developed resistance to it. Brand names in the UK include "Augmentin" and "Amoxyclav"

An American-trained Thai pulmonologist in Chiang Mai switched me 4 years ago when I mentioned that the basic amox seemed to me to be less effective for me. He said resistance was commonplace among those of my age group (then 63 yo) just from sheer overuse for a range of lesser ailments over a long lifetime. Amoxicillin+Clavulanic has been my general bronchX drug of choice for exacerbations from then on, except when my chest tells me and/or my normal Thai pulmo's stethoscope indicates a potential pneumonia bug connection (has usually been Levafloxacin in that event, though a pneumococcal vaccine a couple of years back seems to have protected me latterly from pneumonia).

I generally don't give results from sputum samples so my treatment usually involves a bit of educated guesswork based on previous experiences. Normal sufferers that do show results should get a developing micropurulent sputum sample analysed**, together with sensitivity analysis which a pulmonologist or GP should be able to use to recommend an appropriate antibi.

If you are the type that wants to know more (and maybe even feels the need to have an educated discussion with their medical practitioner or - dare I say it - check whether they know what they are talking about) you can see expert guidance that properly informed UK medics use for antibi selection purposes (and sets out the management of bronchX generally) you can see the expert guidance that doctors do, or should, use*. The BTS Guideline contains a table of different bugs that afflict us bronchX sufferers, lined up against their first line defence recommended antibiotic and second line alternative when and if the first doesn't work. It's table 6 on page 39 (under Section 13 "Exacerbations" in the copy I downloaded)

*The "BRITISH THORACIC SOCIETY GUIDELINE FOR BRONCHIECTASIS IN ADULTS January 2019" - google exactly that if you want to do your own research

** I generally wait until I have other unwellness symptoms beyond simply a developing micropurulent sample but those without experience or confidence to make their own decisions on timing of reaching for their "rescue antibi" would normally consult their medical practitioner.

Thank you Sanitsuk for such an informative reply, which I will keep for future reference and delve into google for further assistance. Knowledge for me is the way forward as my gp isnt really much use with bronch x

Hi,

Amoxici;;in is an antibiotic that has a wider range of bugs it can kill. It is alto cheaper, most doctors start with this then some move on others give you another dose. I find that Clarithromycin or Doxycyclin works best for me so I tell GP at the outset do not give me Amoxicillin.

I think there is research that shows amoxicillin given 3 times a week is good as a preventative/ prophylactic. Not for me, wasn’t effective and had side effects. My pulmonologist said it functions as an anti inflammatory that way. I do ok on doxy so far. Also had Ceftin and Augmentin (US names). Can’t take Ciproxin.

santisuk profile image

Augmentin was patented by a British company in the late 70s, and that company is now part of GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) a UK corporation - via Beecham Group, a former UK company that then took over US group SmithKline and which then got absorbed by another UK pharma group Glaxo to form GSK.

No doubt sold in the US as well but we Brits, losing self-confidence somewhat over the Brexit mismanagement fiasco, can at least claim the credit for developing amox+clavulanic!!

[I worked on the Beecham Group external audit and some of those business combinations at a time when Augmentin was a big money-spinner, so pardon my intervention please - not meaning to be snotty, honest!]

Agreed
