Well very interesting reading stone so surely he should be ordering special tests don’t you think, or are they just writing me off .. because they can’t solve the mucus issue with the jackhammer gulett gosh what else can I get, thanks stone any gems of yours that you think I should do xx

The section “ what your doctor can do” is good starting point, I noticed a mention of dust mites, just checked on Amazon there’s a good selection of devices and sprays.

Hi carolg1 . I've had high eosinophils in my blood tests for years. When I queried it years ago I was told it was because I had asthma. Any red asterisks against any readings were totally ignored. I have had a problem with itchy skin for a very, very long time and unsuccessful visits to various Dermatologists . COPD was diagnosed almost thirteen or fourteen years ago and just recently I had asked for a special blood test which meant that I went to the doctor and asked for a print off. This sheet actually said at the top " Eosinophilia " - I hadn't seen any results since moving surgery and this doctor was unconcerned about this result so I guess that's it ! Sheila x

Thanks Sheila, it’s not the itching that bothers me it’s the inability to breath it feels like intestines and everything is wrong when I’m trying to breath weird and scary, like someone is stood on the bottom of my windpipe/oesophagial massive like squeezing spasms for hours .... thanks xx carol

Well I hope they sort you out properly Carol. It must be very frightening to have those squeeezing feelings. I've always felt I needed to see a haematologist as it was a blood thing but the doctor all those years ago said no but she'd refer me to a dermatologist. Nothing against dermatologists as a whole but they were as much use to me as a chocolate fireguard. I've had every antihistamine known to man to no effect. The eosinophilia is affecting you in a different way and you must keep pressing them to follow this up. Take care, Sheila xx

Hello Carol,

Have they advised what the actual Eosinophils count was in terms of x10*9/L (normal range can be up to 0.4) ? I see you have mentioned 0.06, from my understanding, if this is in the same units mentioned (x10*9/L) then this is on the low side and at the worst could suggest only very mild esoinophillia. Unless it was 0.6?

Unless of course, they are basing the diagnosis on further medical information etc.

Hi Ron thanks for the reply I’ve just read the letter again it says following blood results there is significant eosinophilia of 0.6 ? He didn’t mention it to me in person or discuss it, I have bronchiectasis and emphysema jackhammer gullet and now small nodules suspect in left lung I’ve had a really terrible 3 months on winter chest issues it’s knocked me for six, I have so much mucus it hideous, I just feel like I’m going from pillar to post and not one thing is being singularly eliviated , thanks for the reply xx

Hi Carol,

Ok understood 0.6 is elevated but I don't believe it is massively elevated. High Eosinophils can be caused by a variety of conditions. From the information you have provided, my guess would be that it implies some kind of infection (possibly fungal/parasitic) and increased inflammation which is not uncommon for people with bronchiectasis and emphysema. Did you have an ESR or CRP blood test (these blood tests are inflammatory markers - given your symptoms, it is likely these are elevated too)?

Therefore, I wouldn't worry too much about this - but perhaps your consultant may want to consider some anti-fungal treatement, you should discuss this with him/her as they will know your full medical history and other blood test results. May I ask your age, and if you have smoked?

Hi Ron, I’m 62 yes I was quite a heavy smoker up to 4 yrs ago kept stopping then starting, worked in the coal mine industry for 30 yrs amongst oodles of coal dust.. my inflammation levels are a bit on the high side I’m told, it’s like really heavy stinging telling me I can’t breath properly round my diaphragm bottom ribs but ,sometimes feels more like mu gut not my lungs but really affects my breathing, I really appreciate your help Ron, I’ve got a meeting with respitory consultant on weds next so want to get my questions ready to try n get some help. Hi, glad to hear you have stopped smoking! Hope your appointment went well.

It does sound like a fairly complex history, the nodules are most likely infection which is not clearing properly due to the damage to your lungs (the Emphysema you mentioned) The breathing problems are could be due to this too, and maybe increasing inhaled steroids may help. Another more generic thing to possibly consider is heart burn, which can affect breathing - so possibly something like Gaviscon may help.

I'm sure your consultant is taking all this into consideration to work out the best possible treatment. Given the complexity, it's not a simple task - but your lung specialist will be experienced with such cases. Hopefully the warmer weather will help with your symptoms.

Hi Ron I am in hospital at the moment as things were just going down hill I could barely breath or move without a struggle it scared my young son so he called ambulance, it turns out I have pneumonia in the bottom of my left lung, dear lord I’m just picking everything up, hopefully things will improve but I’m sad to say I don’t have much faith in my respitory man I’ve been telling them for weeks I was just going downhill.... but nature of the beast that seems to be the norm. Hopefully they will take things more seriously now and fix the problem for you, or at least find a way to manage it so you can live more normally. I look forward to hearing when you are back home!
