Dairy Products

Milk and milk products have a bad reputation of causing an increase in mucus production. Consuming dairy products may make mucus thicker, but this does not actually increase the amount of mucus produced in the nose. After drinking milk, a person might have difficulty swallowing and have a perceived thickening of mucus and saliva, but research indicates milk does not increase actual mucus production, according to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. Although dairy products, such as ice cream and yogurt, can thicken mucus for a person suffering from a head cold, eating cold dairy products, such as ice cream, may help ease irritation in a sore throat.

Just what I was going to say stone! Cut down a bit on dairy and drink more water to help thin it down. x

Spot on advice from all posters above. My asthma flares and wheezes if eat too much cheese etc. I always drink plenty of water. I also drink and use oat, rice and soya milk as alternatives on my cereal. Im not too bad off cottage cheese and eggs with some yolk took out. Hope this helps.

Hi Joseph. Years ago, I stopped all dairy products for 3 months. It made absolutely no difference to my bronchiectasis. That's just my experience, of course - you might be different! As others say, drinking plenty is very important. I drink a lot of black tea so I asked my consultant if it mattered (the physiotherapist had told me to stop the tea & drink water instead.) The consultant said it didn't matter what fluid I drink as long as I drink lots of it!
