Induced sputum sample contamination

Hi all, in work, our technicians carry out the induced sputum procedure on patients with asthma and COPD. If a sputum sample has streaks of blood in it, our lab can't process it. Why is that?

The purpose of the sputum test is to indentify bactarial infections. Presence of blood can invalidate the test. One, the blood could hold any bactaria discovered so the technicians will have no idea whether it came from the lungs or the blood. Also, blood can kill off some the the bacteria giving a false reading.
