Buteyko Breathing?
Hi moosemoose, I do Buteyko Breathing exercises ....and went in a course many years ago when they were cheaper.
I have asthma / COPD ....but I think the exercises are aimed more at the asthma side ....my lungs are damaged as well.
They have helped with my breathing , but I had frequent chest infections , only now , with a new GP am I getting somewhere with those.
The courses are expensive and you need to trust the teacher. I paid for two of my daughters to go on courses with different tutors.....one was excellent one not so good......she was texting during the session!
I will pm you with the name of the good instructor....mine went to Australia.
Off to yoga now ....will message you when I get back.
I think this is good for some with asthma but not necessarily for anyone with COPD. The goal of Buteyko is to limit the intake of O2 and increase the CO2 blood levels which is the opposite of what someone with COPD wants to achieve. Also it is very expensive so check with your medics before spending money on something that may not suit you.
Hi, I tried buteyko a year or so back and it really helped me with my asthma and corrected the way I breathe. Asthmatics like me have a tendency to breathe with their mouths open, you think you are taking more oxygen in by helping to breathe, but by breathing the correct way you take more oxygen in through the nose. The one thing she told me which I value to this day is when eating, walking and excersing you only breathe through your nose and it works.
My therapist did buteyko alongside pilates and wasn't expensive under Β£20 for an hours session in Poole, Dorset UK. Can give you her details if your interested.
Forgot to mention with the correct breathing techniques with buteyko you breathe through the nose with your mouth shut, hard to do at first, but by excersing it will come naturally, now I do it all the time. Just remember to breathe through the nose with your mouth shut.
Hope that's helps.

I have IPF.I discovered Buteyko when my daughter told me about it.I bought two books on it.*No need to go on a course.Read the books and do it yourself.I did and I'm improving rapidly.Sent oxygen tanks back now.
