I have had COPD since 2006. And just stopped smoking last year. I know it is a hard thing to do. But you will do it one day when the time is right take care xx

Hi Amanda5672

I smoked for 47 years and thought i could never give up. Was diagnosed with COPD in March this year, gave up smoking within 12 days as i knew the only way to slow the progression of this disease is to stop. I went from 35, to 20, to 15, to 5 and then the last couple of days only 3. I used nicotine chewing gum to help. It was the hardest thing i have ever done, but i am so pleased i did it. Now i have to put my hand over my nose if i am near anyone who smokes, in fact i try to avoid anyone who smokes. I find the smell disgusting.

One thing i found difficult is nighttime as i enjoy a glass of wine, so within a couple of weeks i started using e cigs, mainly at night.

I would recommend them.If you want to slow the progression you have to stop NOW.

Good luck.

Merv

It is soooo hard! I have reduced also, got to 14 per day and stuck on that so am just as bad and can't offer anything sensible to help you.my husband like swerv here has done it- 3 years now not smoking but he's not a happy chappie as an ex smoker- but can breathe better!

Hi Amanda, the only advice I can give you is ...... Stop smoking.

You will feel so much better if you do. I know it's a very hard thing to do, I've been there.

It all depends if you want to stop.

Your COPD will progress quicker if you keep smoking.

Get help from your GP or pharmacist. There's lots of help out there if you want it.

Good luck 🌻

I was hospitalized in March for a really bad chest infection. Consultant told me not to smoke again or Id find myself in and out of hospital. I smoked for 50 years and stopped cold turkey. It isn't easy and 9 months on I still occasionally think about having a smoke. I then think how much better I've been since I stopped. You look very young and if you quit now you can have a long life.

Please keep trying, you will get there and you will feel so much better.

I beat myself up everyday because I smoked for so long I don't really have much else wrong with me except my lungs and I could have been a really active older mom and nanny if I had given up years ago.

take care

Stop beating yourself up. We all make mistakes - it's called living! :-)

Please try to stop you look so young would hate to think you would get so much worse so much sooner and spoil your life at this stage. Stopping smoking really does help :(

You know you need to stop! There is a Quit Support community on health Unlocked which you might find useful.

I've COPD and it's taken me 4 or 5 attempts to finally stop a couple of months ago. When the time is right you'll know when to stop. For me it was when I was last ill and for the first few days I didn't notice the missing cigarette. Then it was down to will power. If that hadn't worked for me I was going to try the E CIG. Good luck for when you do try and stop one and for all.

It's hard, it's so hard, but it has to be done... Just a thought. Which do you prefer -- a fag or a coffin? Keep on smoking, and what you'll get will be the latter, much sooner than you would want.

Catnip that's not the way to help someone to stop smoking. You are as bad as one of the consultants I saw when I was in hospital he had me in tears

Hi Amanda,

I understand, I'm in the same boat.

Diagnosed with Emphysema for the past few years and tried all ways to cut down and give up.

I am going to start that Champix stop smoking drug which means I smoke for the first 7 days whilst taking the drug and on day 8 I stop as the tablets increase in strength.

I heard favourable reports about the success rate of this drug so why don't you look into it.

Oh, day 8 will be new years day so it will be a new years resolution as well.

Here's hoping.

All the best,

Phil (Gosshawk)
