I have COPD and had anaesthetic ok. But they don't use general anaesthetic for cataract surgery. Only local needed and very straightforward these days.

I to have had the operation for Cataract. No problems not even injections, just drops into the eye. My mom at the age of 91 has between February and April has had both eyes done.

I wish your hubby good luck, In church I had a friend who had to stick his nose on his mobile phone to read the messages. Suddenly he came without glasses, said he could see the end of the church brilliantly and it all took 20 minutes. He could hear the surgeon talking to his assistant, but couldn't move - only a local anaesthetic.

I have "escaped" the operation. I just went for a test just in case, but the opthalmologist told me the blurred vision was caused by grazing of the cornea. He gave me a special cortisone for the eye, within a week the blurring went. I went to my local optometrist who told me, after examination, that he couldn't do anything to improve my sight. It's stable as it is. So I have my old glasses and ... my old eyes too! Cheers, Mic

My husband has had cataract surgery, he had local anesthetic. He said it didn't hurt a bit and was very quick. They will probably advise against a general anesthetic.

I had one eye done, my husband both. It only takes about 40 minutes after putting drops in to enlarge the pupils. Pain free , results amazing,

Half way through my post and it vanished. But don't worry this is a local anaesthetic and done in no time at all. Worst part to me living alone was putting

the eye drops in.

You won't need anaesthetic Romolo . They put drops in your eye about 20 minutes before, and you don't feel a thing. The actual operation only takes about 10 minutes and there's nothing to it. Bit of a weird sensation, but not particularly unpleasant and the results are unbelievable. You wait 'til you see all the vivid colour of things afterward, you'll be so glad you had it done. Good luck. XX

The biggest concern is after the surgery and following the instructions of not lifting etc.

Hi Romolo55 - I've just had a Prostrate Operation, and was told by the Surgeon I could NOT have a General Anaesthetic as " Having C.O.P.D. I would probably not survive the procedure " - Blimey, ! that was a bit blunt wasn't it !! - so I had to have a Epidural - just the Lower part of my body was "Put out of action " ! - it was a curious sensation for about six hours before "Feeling " came back down there ! . I should imagine, just a "Local" Anaesthetic is all you will need for this minor surgery which I am told doesn't take very long - unlike my Prostrate Op - should have taken me Beer and sandwiches - went on for well over an hour and a half - Good luck, - you'll be fine ..

I was told that cataract surgery would be difficult because of my COPD I cannot lie flat!

would appreciate hearing if anyone else has had this suggested ?

Actually your body isn't entirely flat but your head and neck are. I took my oxygen with me because I find breathing difficult if I lie flat and this helped enormously
