when you go for a lung funtion test spirometry breathing test, i often wonder if you had done exercise just before you went for the test.. would that then show a good inprovment in your fev1 results.
but then i think it would not be a true result or do it not work that way

If I have to go to do a Spiro at the hospital I try and make sure I get there about 30 minutes early, so I have time to sit and rest, and get my breath back - just so I can do the test...
The patient information my lung function department gives out specifically states to not exercise for 30 minutes before spirometry and other LF tests.

I'm still trying to figure out how hospital lung function tests give me a FEV1 of 76% when tests done at my GPs (3 different surgeries over the years) consistently show FEV1 of between 47-52%! Would welcome any answers as whilst 76% is great, it won't work well for renewing my DLA next spring!
this is intresting has makes me think that i should go back and get another test because the nurse told me that i have mild enphysema but then my gp said that it is moderate and the copy that i ask for said 62% moderate but i sometimes think its how you feel is morte inportant
They say that up to 5% variation in FEV1 results is not significant but the difference between your hospital and GP test is a bit bonkers. My hospital tests are done on space age equipment, whereas when ive had spirometry at the GP its been on a diddy little thing, so I would be more inclined to trust the hospital's version as more accurate.
Bit of a dilemma eh? Be well enough to be in the mild category; or be worse in order to qualify for DLA/PIP. You could just quote the GP's one I guess. You'll be older than when you last applied, copd is progressive and life doesnt get any easier as we get older.

hi o2trees... sorry if i misled you but what i ment was when a nurse did my spirometry test in january ( has my gp dont have a spirometry )she told me i had mild emphysema but when i had to go back to my gp for the same results that had been sent to him by the same nurse it said on the results paper moderate copd... fev1/fvc ratio 62.0
unless they do mean mild emphysema and moderate copd but i have never heard of that..all very confuseing to me and my spirometry test was done by a small black box
And, music, it is how you feel that's important. The BODE index assesses the state of your condition by more indicators than just your FEV1. It includes for instance how far you can go on the 6 minute walk test, and everyone is different. My FEV1 is currently 37% and yet I can walk more than the predicted distance for my age - (admittedly pursed-lip-breathing like a steam train). How can that be?
Copd does really affect us all differently.
Talking about how you feel, I was VERY well when tested at hospital - much better than is usually the case. So perhaps the result varies widely enough that even though I have capacity for 76% I generally do not achieve anything like this level? It's all a mystery!
Haha BODE index confuses it more as I'm 4 on dyspnoea!
Hi! Do any of you have an understanding of the Bronchoprovocation test? I had one the other week....basically inhaled all of the substances without a single waver from my base line..so basically that would mean I do not have asthma right? But then, when I inhaled the recoverying nebuliser drug and did a big breath out it went up quite a bit...so now I just don't know what to think...does this mean I do have asthma, or would the recovery drug help my breathing with other lung diseases? I don't get the results til the end of June and I feel very frustrated because I just want to know what is wrong with me....thanks guys, hAve a great day!
One of the characteristics of asthma is that it is reversible with medication which could be what's happened with your tests.
This is why they prefer you not to have taken medication before the test, so that your full reversibility potential can be measured.
I always ask for and keep a copy of my test results. You could maybe call your doctor/consultant's secretary and explain that not knowing is making you anxious and could s/he possibly send you a copy as end of June is too long to wait. Then you could call the helpline for clarification - the nurses there are fantastic and clinically extremely knowledgeable.

That is outrageous and anyway I think its your legal right as a patient to have your own copies of tests and any letters written between health practitioners about you.

hi bak from my good friends funeral now,went church but for bldy copd couldnt go cram .her daughter nos wat i have as did my friend.she understood why i not goin crem but i went to church to see her of .copd or not.outside was like a tap room god ,had copd a bit but was cancer of the spine and liver then came a tumour in her stomach mother of god.the reason i paid was last year i had gall bladder out,4week later went to gp with pain under left ribs wud not go.sent me for xray .gp said all ok must be with u havin gall out,xmas got ill very ill a locum sent me for a scan showed uo copd ,locum asked why i ignored xray in june,told her as gp said was ok no action needed.i paid for my med files saw the june xray ,went to see the clown.he said oh im sorry well if u have stopped cigs u be fine,wat a cant print it on hear,i said i wud have stopped in june if u had read xray proper,i have a new gp now he is on the ball but im moderate now,u cant take action as its smoking really not all down to cigs,new gp told me ,whooping cough measles bit pheonmia chiken pox meningitus yellow jaundice all tells on ur lungs later,i had all thozs.plus i worked in mills 20 odd yrs,i stopped cigs at xmas wen i found out.idiot ex gp,im 63 nearly 64 ,its not rite we have to pay for 10pence of photo copies.my new gp wont charge me as he lets me see everything.take care
Music... I wondered after taking the test if I should have used my inhaler before taking the test ( although I was obviously told not to) as I think it's misleading to go in without aid from it, then be given a huge dose at the end lol...surely anyone would benefit from it with or without asthma?
