rosavastatin dose

I am trying to find info about this drug from ones that take it. I am trying to arm myself with as much info before my Doctors app on Friday coming. I have read a lot of posts of late I am sure there was a comment by someone saying they only take 5mg a week. Been researching about doses on internet and seen that taking 5mg Rosavastatin once or twice a week is equivalent to taking a low dose other statin every day say a 10mg as the Rosavastatin is stronger. Would welcome your thoughts

Hi, I was discharged from hospital following heart attack in April on 80mg daily of atorvastatin, whilst initially seemed ok after 2 or 3 weeks I got leg muscle pain that I couldn't tolerate. I was offered rosuvastatin as an alternative and told many people find less muscle pain with it. I was told that dose is equivalent to half of atorvastatin so try 40mg daily. I politely declined and tried 20mg and whilst leg pains weren't as bad still there so gp agreed to try 5mg. Been on that last 3 months, no leg pain and more importantly cholesterol back in normal range (oh and I've lost a stone too..) . So maybe low dose and see how cholesterol readings look after typically 3 months to a blood test and take it from there, good luck.

You need to take your statin every day for it to work successfully and efficiently.Once a week or alternate days doesn't help the medication work efficiently or your body to respond to it as well as it can.

I and my husband both take 5mg Rosuvastatin daily with no side effects.

I have Familial HyperCholesteroleimia along with other cardiac and health issues. I also require Ezetimibe to control my cholesterol.

My husband has Type1 Diabetes and is over 45 and has begun to need help controlling his cholesterol and cardiac risk.

Give the daily 5mg a trial for a good period of time 4-6 weeks at least. Any side effects on statins other than Atorvastatin which is the one with the most reported side effects do seem to reduce once your body has adjusted to having them. They should test your cholesterol but also do a liver and kidney function test after three months to check that things are improving and everything is functioning well. If they don't call you with that blood check , ring and arrange one and keep the results of all blood tests for anything in a hard copy file so you can easily chart your progress . Increasing B vitamins in your diet and drinking the recommended amount of fluids daily help to prevent or reduce statin side effects.

Often it's internal dehydration that causes many of the common side effects on various medications to occur.

Statins , PPIs like Omeprazole and antacids and various other medications like aspirin can reduce how well your stomach metabolizes and absorbs nutrients , particularly B12 and Folates and it can actually be having a borderline low , insufficient or Deficienct level of these , along with low Vitamin D that causes the side effects like pain, fatigue and brain fog.

The nutrient and fluid adjustment often leads to the statin side effects being reversed.

Taking a Vitamin D supplement, especially during the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere, also helps to reduce the build up of things like muscle or joint pain.

You haven't explained why you are interested in rosuvastatin in particular over other statins ahead of your GP appointment. Are you already taking another statin, but experiencing possible side effects? Are you already taking it but getting side effects? If you aren't taking a statin and you are expecting your GP to recommend taking one, the usual one prescribed by GPs in the UK is atorvastatin, and you will most likely be asked to start on that one first. Finally the health professionals who will reviewing your situation are much better placed than anyone on here or perhaps Dr Google to advise you on any required medication dose quantity and frequency personal to you, since they are professionally qualified and, importantly, have access to all your relevant medical records.

I'm on 20mg a day and have been for a few years now. My chol level is 3. something. It doesn't cause me any problems.

I was on 10mg Rosuvastatin for many years having chol level around 4-5. My doctor told me this is good for a normal person but me having bypass OP 4 years ago need to double it to 20mg to be save. But when I had a blood analysis lately at a hospital the surgeon told me to take only 5mg because my body needs cholesterol to function properly.

No side effects all these years except getting a little bit aggressive from statins (my husband says).

I am on Rosuvastation. A 5mg tablet per day is equivalent to 20mg of Atorvastatin. These, I believe, are the recently updated starting doses for these two statins. It is worth bearing in mind that the benefits of an increased statin dose are not linear. The largest fall in Total Cholesterol is achieved on the lowest dose. All statins have a half life. Taking a statin once per week would I suspect have few health benefits given that that the benefits of a statin leave the body within 3 days of the last dose.

There are many myths surrounding the use of statins:

Interesting reading the link you sent. He doesn’t mention that in some individuals statins can cause mental problems Anxiety, mood swings agressive behaviour even suicidal thoughts these are reports I have seen which may not be considered everyone is different last statin I tried was prevastatin 10mg. First attempt after three weeks got very anxious putting my heart rate and blood pressure up agitation stopped them. Some time later tried again taking every other day. After a weeks or so same thing happened the doctors knew of this. Tried simvastatin years ago bad joint and muscle pains like with Atoravastatin I tried Ezitimibe after five weeks gave me gout couldn’t walk had to stop that. I am not against statins they don’t like me this is why I am suggesting Rosavastatin 5mg taking it slowly one a week gradually increasing if I can sorry for long answer

I’m on 5mg Rosuvastatin daily with no issues at all. Both Atorvastatin and Simvastatin gave me issues with side effects.

The Rosuvastatin cut my cholesterol levels by 2/3rds so really effective.

I think you should tell your GP about your concerns. My husband takes 40mg Atorvastatin per day with no problems. However, our daughter was prescribed it and it affected her badly. within a few days of starting the medication. Her leg muscles practically seized up, making it difficult for her to walk and climb the stairs. Her GP has changed her prescription to Rosuvastatin and, so far, after just a few weeks, she is OK. I have taken Rosuvastatin 5mg per day for years with no problems. So there seems no rhyme nor reason to who will be be badly affected. I suggest you take whatever the GP prescribed and should you develop problems, speak with him a.s.a.p.
