Octenisan

I have a date for my CABG, next Wednesday.

I was given a bottle of Octenisan to use before the op in the shower. I think I was told 5 days, does this seem right? And do I use it on my hair too?

Any advice welcome

Hello :-)

I am pleased you have a date for your op and not long to wait

Yes if I remember right about 5 days sounds about right and I am not sure but I think they did say wash your hair in it to

I am sure others will maybe remember and reply

I want to wish you all the best and I hope you will keep us updated :-) x

Hi I just had to have spinal surgery and the instructions I was given was body/ body and hair alternative days (can wash hair after application)Contact time with skin 1 minute before rinsing off and if you have nasal gel twice a day applied with a cotton bud and massage nose to ensure coverage. Hope that helps

I had similar, 5 days seems to be the thing. I was in hospital for 5 days before my op and that's all there was to wash with anyway. They are going to open you up and the last thing anyone needs is an infection getting in. I think that is basically an antibacterial soap.

hi. Have just had my cabg in wythenshawe on Tuesday. I seem to recall it was for 7 days if possible and yes they did say to wash my hair.

You also have a shower in it the night before on the ward and on the morning of surgery, if that helps

Best of luck with it

I’m in Wythenshawe too. It’s all getting real now.

How was the experience for you?

Well the staff are amazing both on the wards and icu. They constantly checking changing or injection something. You fell very safe in their hands.

At the moment I’ve still got chest drains and catheter and every part of me is swollen. Again all very normal and I’m certain you’re in the best of hands.

That good to hear and reassuring. Hoping everything settles for you quickly.

Are you home now?

No still on ward F6. Will be a few days at least as I can barely walk 5 foot and that’s with a zimmer frame… and I’m only 57…

You will be absolutely fine your in the best of hands. I had my op at 9 am,a double bypass, the surgeon came to see me at 8, I went to icu afterwards as you would expect. I was awake at 1:40 am and the surgeon and his registrar came in to see me, that’s dedication.

He popped back in at 9 am to say hello!

As many have said for us it’s a once in a lifetime experience, but for these guys they can do 2 per day.

Only weeks before my surgeon had done a double lung transplant lasting we hours…

Amazing, that is so reassuring! I am with Mr Waterworth. Is that who you had?

No I had Mr Pai but I’ve seen that consultant and equally exudes confidence. I was on the enhanced recover programme so I may be out of here by Saturday.

Thanks - I hope not to meet you next week, because you are back home feeling better!

Indeed. Just had a ward round any my drains and catheter are coming out today.

It felt like I had to learn to walk again but dragging three six foot tubes and canisters doesn’t help.

Things moving in right direction for sure.

Same here. I was given MRSA / decolonisation wash: body/hair wash, nasal and a mouth wash if I remember properly, 5 days cleaning before the op. Can't remember if it was called Octenisan though. Hope all goes well 👍🏻

Yes. My husband had to use it for 5 days before his bypass. Not sure about your hair but it won't do any harm.

Hi OldaYoda - nothing to add to what everyone else has said, but I just wanted to wish you well for your surgery next week.

We were back at Wythenshawe earlier this week for my partner’s follow-up with the surgeon. Everything was fine and he’s been discharged back to the cardiologist/GP. I hope it goes as well for you.

Best wishes

Thank you - it’s good to hear positive outcomes.

My main worry now is being postponed and having to wait again. I have made all the arrangements, cancelled stuff, started using the shower stuff, stopped one of my tablets so I am good to go!

I will post here once the plumbing is fixed!
