Gerd and mi

Hi I was wondering if anyone has experienced the following I had a stemi in July 2022 and since them my gastric symptoms have been horrendous to the point its affecting my life. Have chest pain and breathlessness, numerous investigations have ruled out its my heart and the likelihood is my stomach. My cardiac consultant told me to get the fundo, even before my symptoms flared up.

The problem is my gastric surgeon won't take any of that into account, he is obsessed with my weight causing the issues, even when I was just off the weight he wanted me to be, my symptoms were worse. I came out of my last appointment in tears.

Has anyone had the same

Thanks for taking the time too read.

I also have GERD and had MI in September then TTS in October. I am being treated for "Likely Takosubo Cardiomyopathy" and starting investigations for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. I take heart medication and PPI but do notice some chest symptoms are after I've eaten which I am assuming are stomach rather than heart pains hope you get sorted.Maybe ask for 2nd opinion.

i am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing this as the link between gastric and cardiac conditions and symptoms has been know for a long time, but doctors work within their own area of specialism and rarely cooperate over care when there is a mixed or confusing situation - sadly you seem to be caught in that situation

firrstly, in the hope of reassuring you that you are not alone, here is an extract from a 2009 article, taken from one of many which discus situations like yours:

The relationship between cardiac and gastrointestinal disease is widely regarded as being a complex one – disorders of the two systems commonly co-exist, and the symptoms of angina pectoris are notoriously difficult to differentiate from gastro-oesophageal problems. In addition, it has commonly been observed that patients suffering with gastrointestinal disturbance suffer from cardiac symptoms whose aetiology can be attributed to their primary gut problems. Recent evidence has shown that this is a relatively common manifestation and that the incidence of these secondary cardiac complications has been underestimated in patients with gastroenterological disease.

if you search for "Cardiac manifestations and sequelae of gastrointestinal disorders", Charlotte manisty 2009, you should find the article from the Brit.Journal of Cardiology

but also i am wondering if you have been investigated for microvascular disorder or coronary artery spasm? particularly if you are a woman - as Quaddie mentioned, there are conditions like Takotsubo which can be mistaken for an MI but the usual treatment does not really help - search for posts and responses on those conditions and from Milkfairy here

i know it's hard work but it helps if you do some digging to find relevant info and be persistant with the medics - building up your self-advocacy skills can be very helpful (and can be used throughout your life) - i find it amazing that doctors manage to treat so much these days but they still have a ton of personal, technical and institutional limitations which mean that they don't know everything!🌺

Hi Snapscleo, yes I have cardiovascular /heart disease and GERD, symptoms are very similar, so much so the heart attack (NSTEMI) I had in June last year I thought was indigestion until got in my arm too, the pain was much deeper inside I realised later. Any chance that maybe discussing it with your gp and basically telling them what you've told us here to see if they could maybe fight your corner too? I take PPIs too Lansaprazole, am more symptomatic since NSTEMI, lansaprazole has been doubled and the soluble aspirin has been changed to Enteric coated aspirin. Maybe try asking gp to refer you to a different gastro consultant if possible? No harm in trying if you can. Hope you're feeling a bit better atleast. Ps, I take gtn spray kind of learning what it works for and doesn't also gaviscon after meals. Good luck moving forward 🤞
