Alcohol and Caffeine

I'm curious as to how many people here have given up alcohol and caffeine. I stopped drinking both a little over a year ago. I'm a little surprised that my cardiologist did not outright advise me to stop at least the alcohol. The advice was no more than 2 drinks/day. In any case, since stopping, my health has steadily improved. Without caffeine, any aural migraines I used to get are now a thing of the past. The best part is that my sleep has improved dramatically. My resting heart rate is consistently in healthy range. Before I stopped drinking alcohol, my intake was probably 1 drink every other day. Caffeine was two cups of coffee a day.

I'm curious as to other people's experiences, especially on how such changes affect heart health.

I wasn't much of an alcohol drinker before my heart issues. Mainly because I end up feeling hungover even after 1 or 2.I did however give it up altogether as well as switching to decaf coffee. This wasn't due to medical advice, more a case of me doing everything that I can to look after myself. I don't miss either and after 2 years I'm not sure how I'd feel if I hit the hard stuff again

Yes this one of the steps I am taking. I also drink red wine often every couple days. Half bottle a time. I don't think it's too good for health in the long run. There are studies recently that it could be healthy for hearts by lowering blood pressure by a drinking a glass a day. I mean the italians do it and they live to be the oldest in the world!

But I think it's probably best to quit both regarding a damaged heart.

Hello :-)

I have not had a drink now for 30 years way before I started having heart issues it just never suited me so I just did not bother with it any more

They used to say a glass of red wine was good for the heart not sure if there is any truth in that

I do still have a couple of cups of coffee a day

I cannot say when I stopped drinking other than never having to suffer a hangover again that my sleep improved I have always been a bad sleeper

If I have a coffee or not a day I do not see a difference either

I suffer with Aura migraines and before my heart attacks and Bypasses I could have as many as 1 a week but since then and the medications I take for my heart my migraines have become so much less these last few years so I am not sure if that is any of the meds I take that have helped with that or not

Hope every reply you get will be of some help to you :-) x

once I grasped that my bicuspid aortic valve needed replacement, I stopped alcohol and caffeine.I found it easier to stop 100%. Then I had surgery and that went really well.

After a year of recovery , I have small amounts of alcohol. By small I mean one whisky or one beer per week and half bottle of wine per week. Migraines stopped when I started on Clopidogrel.

I have one decaf coffee and one tea per day. I must say my weight has stabilised nicely.

I haven’t yet sorted a good diet and this is now a must do.

The replacement valve surgery is fabulous. But waiting for the surgery was a bad experience.
