Triple bypass....again
Interesting question. I don't have answers I'm afraid, but pretty much all the people who are in contention for "longest surviving bypass patient" have a similar story to yours. First bypass in mid thirties, then the bypass lasts ten to twenty years before being repeated. I think some people have had three or even four bypass surgeries.
You could interpret it as good news, your cardiologist and surgeon have concluded that you're a solid bet. Your veins have proved themselves as good substitutes for arteries, and you weren't amongst that unfortunate minority where the grafts failed within a year or two.
So good luck with surgery number two. Hopefully in the next decade medical science will figure out a way of extending the life of veinous grafts, otherwise may you go on to have equally successful bypass surgeries numbers three and four!
Hi, congratulations on your bypass lasting so long! All I can comment is I had a triple in September 2022 and they said they can use veins/arteries from either calf or thigh, and either mammary artery.
My bypass failed within hours of surgery and I don't have choice of another one cos my veins are so rubbish unfortunately. Sounds like yours are amazing so they still have many to choose from.
All the best
Susie
Oh sorry to hear that, hopefully when I have it done it'll give me another 20 years 🙏
good luck on your second one my dad died 15yrs after having his first triple he died at 48 that was 30yrs ago.
Hi Flagger that is brilliant news I had triple 9 years ago at age 60 and still going ok, they took veins from same places as you. I didn’t know they could do it again. I was warned by surgeon after op to look after these pipes as they couldn’t be done again. Maybe it was an age thing. I can’t help with your question, but I wish you all the luck, a good recovery and they last as long as mine are. Take care of yourself
