Need advice/experience please. I know you are not doctors but just wondered if anyone has had something similar. It’s Easter hols and can’t get a doctors appointment until 25th. Hubby takes Xarelto post ablation for AF he has been taking it for about 9 months no problem. On Friday he had a little blood in his stools. Last night he passed about 200ml of blood. No stomach pains and tummy is not tender to touch. Question is should he keep on with the Xarelto? Should we go to A and E we live in France so getting advice over the phone is a bit tricky due to language barriers.

If you're struggling for a doctors appointment I'd go to hospital... if bowelbabe has taught us anything it should be to get this kind of thing checked out. Better safe than sorry.

Absolutely agree it needs checking out but mainly concerned about continuing or not the anti coagulants?

That's not something we can advise on I'm afraid, the doctors in A&E would need to look into that... if you go this morning before he takes the pill they'll be able tell you pretty quickly before it becomes a "missed dose".

If that was happening to me I'd want to see someone right away. If no GP available I would go to A&E. Surely if you tell the receptionist at your GP's surgery what's happening a doctor would see your husband?

it’s rural France so closed means closed I’m afraid no one there at all.

Easter has gone by, our GP's in the UK are back working. Do your GP's have the whole Easter week off work? I suppose you could wait and see if the bleeding continues, I guess the blood could be coming from piles?

Are you sure your measure is right? 200ml is a lot…I looked it up, its nearly a cup full (unless Ive got all this v v wrong?) Do correct me.

I know nothing about this drug but if i passed 200ml red blood anally I would go to A and E, whatever country I was in.

I hope he's OK?

yes i know it’s a lot although it is hard to tell

Even if you have overestimated the measure….you obviously thought it was a lot. And its a worrying symptom. I would still go straight to A and E.

I was sent to A&E in UK because I was weeing blood, the doctor told me to stop taking my anti coag, I had to go back the next day for CT scan and a different doctor said don’t stop taking the ant coag! So I decided to stop taking it for a few days then restarted it and was ok. You really need urgent advice, but if there is that much blood I would not take the pill until I had seen a doctor.

thank you he didn’t take last nights tablet but he is stubborn and is waiting to see what happens today 😩🤬

Dear You,

The Rule of thumb { remember I am not medically trained } if the blood on the paper / stool is bright red then it is normally piles, wounds etc.

Dark /black stools, dark staining, that is from higher up and could indicate a problem.

Just because you are in France doesn't stop you using the 111 service and follow their instructions,

Remember blood spreads very fast in water so it may look a lot worse than what it is.

Do not stop any medication until you have had the go ahead to do so.

Good luck with it all
