Surgeon wants to operate in 3-4 weeks

Was told I had mild heart issues until early this year when waiting for spinal injection under general anaesthesia. I was told I couldn't have it because my heart was severe. Flash forward a chat to cardiac surgeon last week.. and he wants to operate in 3-4 weeks. I had shock of that but listened to the recording of the appointment. I didn't apparently absorb that he told me I have 6-12 months left if I don't have the op. That's messed my head up a bit hearing that as I didn't seem to register it a week ago at the appointment.🫣

That must have been such a big shock for you. When i read your post. I found myself feeling really pleased that you are, at least, getting really swift attention.

If you tell us what is planned I am sure others here who have been through similar, will help with a bit of infirmation about what to expect and how you might prepare for it.

Do tell us how it all goes.

Well to the finding out suddenly club. I took went in for one thing and ended up walking out with a bypass.

I was told they didn't know how I'd already not had a heart attack or showed symptoms. I was told they needed to operate in the next 1 to 2 weeks.

If like me you'll experience a mix of emotions from anger to worry and everything in between. Just remember to talk to people and not bottle it up. Ask lots of questions if you need.

Life will change for a little bit. But it should get better.

I'm now just over 3 months. I'm not back to normal and adjusting to some things being the new normal. But I'm alive.

Hello :-)

I remember been told I would have 2 years if I did not have a triple heart Bypass and my head was spinning so telling you 6-12 months I can imagine how it has made you feel especially after it took a week to process the information

When I was told I went into a panic but then tried to change those thoughts around and trying to look at the positive that this is not what I wanted to hear but they could do something about it and then all I could think was hurry up and get it done

You will be fine and once it has been done then you will have a new lease of life and a second chance of living life to the full

The op seriously is not as bad as it sounds and I have a feeling you will make a good recovery

Good luck anything you want answering just ask and I look forward to your post telling us how well you are doing :-) x

I have never been in the situation you are in right now and don't know how I would feel, but your post shows how stunned you are and that must be awful for you. The life and plans which you thought lay ahead of you are suddenly looking very wobbly.

There is help here and should be help for you where you are too: the BHF helpline is staffed by cardiac nurses in office hours, you could try calling them - also your cardiac surgeon is a member of a cardiology team which should include specialist nurses, they are often the people who can help you understand what is happening to you and your heart as well as what to expect. If you found this forum you can find out how to contact your hospital cardiology department/team and ask for help. Good luck.

I know others here have already reached out, i hope you are reassured by what they say
