Transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone has gone through this procedure in South Wales UK. My Mum has mitral valve regurgitation (MR) and local Cardiologist only talked about surgical and advised no to that anyway due to age of 78. I've done my own bit of research on this and is very effective on improving quality of life particularly in the elderly. The local Cardiologist doesn't have the ability to do this type of Transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr) anyway so we would like to speak with an interventional Cardiologist so we are able to get a good opinion. If they say no then we can rest our hat knowing that's the case.

If anyone has jumped through the loops on this and got it done on NHS or Private in South Wales, either Cardiff or Swansea could you drop some names in on who did it for you or your loved ones

Much love to you all

Jamie

It is against Forum Rules to mention specific consultants or cardiac teams. Would you travel? I would approach centres of excellence like Papworth, Royal Brimpton and Harefield.

hi. I researched getting minimally invasive mitral valve replacement before my ohs. It wasn’t available in the hospital I was at despite it being a pioneering heart surgery site. The surgeon also encouraged me to have ohs as my tricuspid valve was leaking a bit and they could do both at the same time. As well as Papworth etc South Tees is a Center of excellence for minimally invasive heart surgeries. I would compare the waiting list and success rates for each individual hospital/surgeon as these are published. My surgeon had less than a 1% failure rate but unfortunately for me, following my first mitral valve replacement, I was it and needed a redo. IM still here to tell the tale. Good luck.

Thank you for posting the Medscape link... It could be my saviour! Last week I went for an investigation at a special heart institute in Bristol (you'll know where I mean) where they offer TAB for mitral valve repair. I was turned down as the leak is too wide for the TAB. I received a letter from the cardiologist consultant saying I should just keep taking the tablets! I've had this leak for 22 years and it was only after heart failure was I admitted to my local hospital for 3 weeks. I shall follow this up with him as I'm not about to be written off just yet at 74.

Good luck Jamie and hopefully this could be the answer for your Mum.
