erratic pulse

my husband has just been in hospital with a very high heart beat & shortness of breath. He was prescribed Amiodarone 200mg 3x per day ( now reduced to 200mgper day) + Apixaban+Nebivolol

He was sent home still with shortness of breath.

On taking his pulse it seems chaotic & jumps around from 49 - 104 - I am concerned about this but

He has no follow up for 6 weeks !

Hello :-)

Sorry to hear about your Husband

I am glad you have a follow up in 6 weeks and I know you will keep notes so you can tell them how he has been but in the meantime if you have any concerns about him do not hesitate in either contacting his Consultant or going back to A&E

I am not sure if you have a little home blood pressure machine that takes your pulse readings as well but I have found them very accurate and a handy thing to have at home so I know I am getting the best readings I can

Please let is know how he gets on :-) x

I don't know what part of the country you live in but a 6 week follow sounds great to me, l have had to wait over a year. It's scary.

I was also on Amiodarone for several months gradually reducing the dosage. I found that after a few months my TSH levels rose to unacceptable levels and caused permanent damage to my thyroid gland, so much so that I have to take Levothyroxine probably for the rest of my days. Together with other major side effects I was not prepared to continue with this drug. I am telling you this not to frighten you but to make you aware of the negative side of taking this drug. I strongly suggest that you research Amiodarone and thyroid disfunction on the internet. Read the side effects section of the patient leaflet. Amiodarone is associated with a number of side effects, including thyroid dysfunction (both hypo- and hyperthyroidism), which is due to amiodarone's high iodine content and its direct toxic effect on the thyroid. Ask the doctor if there is an alternative medication. Good Luck.
