Mitral valve repair
Liverpool Heart and Lung hospital have excellent surgeons who specialise in mitral valve repair
I was diagnosed in Istanbul and then had my mitral valve replaced at Barts by Dr Awad. Excellent surgeon. Fantastic hospital. I was out in 5 days and back to normal life (even better life) then before. I strongly suggest him.
Thank you so much for your information. Could you give me some details about doctor an hospital. And cost in istanbul.
Hi,
I had the operation at Barts in London.
Was diagnosed in Istanbul- Istinye University Hospital. Cost of the same op there was £10k. Its a luxurious hospital. There are more affordable ones as well.
As said mine was done in London. Dr Weal Awad and his team is very well known. Superb team. Incredibly calm, reassuring and professionals. Hospital was 5* as well. Care is great. I was out in 5 days and now, 7 months on, I feel much better than before.
I had mine done in Manchester (Wythenshawe Hospital) by Mr James Barnard. He was excellent and all the hospital staff spoke very highly of him. He also works privately if that's the route you are looking to go down.
Good luck with everything.
Toufan Brahami at Harefield pioneered minimum ally invasive mitral valve repair in the UK. Harefield and Brompton specialise in this. There is a German doctor at Brompton who can do it. I had my mitral done by Toufan and my brother had his done at the Brompton. You need to look at how many procedures the doctor carries out per year. If you are going private then this will cost more than £30,000
I had mine repaired with minimally invasive surgery at Northern General Hospital Sheffield. Ask your cardiologist to refer you to one of the specialist heart centres. If you are prepared to travel, you may not have a very long wait.
I had a mitral valve repaired by a surgeon Mr Birdi. Excellent man and has a practice in Harley street and teaches at Basildon Heart Hospital. That was where he performed my surgery. I was 73 yrs old and now back playing tennis (doubles)
I had mine done on the NHS at the Brompton by Tony De Souza through traditional open heart procedure as I had suspected endocarditis. However there is a team at the Brompton that specialises in the far less invasive beating heart repair procedure which you might be eligible for. Check out rbht.nhs.uk/specialists/ms-... who leads the team and had operated on other people in my ward. Be warned though, I suspect the beating heart is a more expensive procedure as it is more complex to perform witha bigger team of experts required, but then recovery is quicker and the stay in hospital shorter.
