I have recently been prescribed Fenofibrate improvised capsules 200mgin order to reduce my cholesterol . I have previously had problems both with Simvastatin and Atorvastatin so I think that I am one of those people who can not take statins.Has anyone any experience of this drug and did it help to reduce their cholesterol levels? I also take 125micrograms of Levothyroxine daily plus Losartan and Bisoprolol.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question. I'd never heard of it........so, I looked it up. I have read that us Hypo's are more likely to experience Rhabdomyolysis with statins, although I've been OK on them.

Hi theminiaturist,

I tried Atorvastatin, Simvastatin and Pravastatin, all having fairly major side effects. At no time was I offered Fenofibrate, probably because my GP did not know of its use in lowering cholesterol levels. Instead I was put on Ezetimibe (as a standalone medication without a statin) which was subsequently proven to be totally ineffective.

After tests, the Pathologist at the local hospital persuaded me to try 10mg of Rosuvastatin on alternate days. Initially I had some fairly major issues, including a persistant headache, but by reducing the dose to 5mg on alternative days, the problem went away after a week or so and I eventually got onto the prescribed dose. I now take 10mg daily with no side effects.

As to the effectiveness of Fenofibrate, I suspect few on the forum will be able to relate their experiences, purely because it is rarely prescribed for cholesterol reduction. Maybe only time will tell. If it proves to be ineffective, then you might consider Rosuvastatin as I did.

With my best regards,

Gerald
