Prisoner in own home

I am a 79 yoear old male and suffer from Paroxymal Atrial Fibrilation. A side issue of this is Post Tachycardic Polyuria which is now almost making me afraid to leave the house for fear of getting caught short. In plain terms if I get an Afib incident I also start to urgently, and frequently have to pass urine in quantity. This is very debilitating not to mention embarrassing. This effect can last for anything up to 5 hours and the need can be as frequent as every 5 minutes. I recently attende the eye clinic for an injection for wet macular degeneration, and had an episode. It was impossible to stay out of the toilet long enough to get the injection, so it was rescheduled. Managed to travel home in friends car with the assistance of several, extra large costa coffee cups. GP says go to A&E. Cardiologist denies condition. Any help, advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

My only experience was when I got a UTI from I believe a failure of hygiene protocols during a surgical procedure. Within two hours I was fast tracked through A&E and on the ward. Your GP needs to refer you to Urology pdq...

Thanks for your response. Sadly, GP has no interest in this problem which has been ongoing for over two years and getting worse. Its definitely not a UTI. Its not actually urine, its just fluid from somewhere in my body, just that it is expelled via the normal channel.

Sounds a very restricting problem. I did read an earlier post and you mentioned prostate problems. Is this resolved?.

Thanks for response. No, prostate issues remain, but not thought to be contributing to this particular problem.

Sympathies. I’m on holiday now, and taking the diuretic Furosemide as part of AF treatment. Others are right..you should seek help for the condition, but a practical aid is to carry an emergency urinal tube ( Amazon £12) which has been a godsend, particularly when driving ( pull over first !)

Good advice about emergency urinal, already with that, its known as my handbag. Been addressing condition for over two years now, so far not found any medical practitioner to be helpful.

Dear Airtech. How utterly demoralising and painfull. I believe that a swollen prostate can prevent your bladder from emptying, hence the endless need to wee.

Are you willing to pay for a private consultation ?

I think your GP might be ushering you to A&E because he can’t get you in to hospital for urgent treatment (?).

You have no doubt contributed to the NHS for 65 years or so. Now you need them, they aren’t available for you.

Thank's for responding. Yes absolutely willing to pay. The problem there is finding an expert in this field of medicine. I appear to know more about the subject than all the so called medical experts this far. GP is just lazy nothing to do with bypassing system to get me into hospital, (sad but true).

Having had another thought about it there appears to be an excess of fluid on your system with AF triggering it's release. It may be that you need a mild diuretic to prevent this fluid retention.

Thanks MichaelJH, from what I can gather when this kicks in the kidneys stop rehydrating and simply produce more fluid to expel. The fluid is not there to be got rid of until Afib kick starts the procedure by way of some communication with the kidneys.
