My mum suffered a severe heart attack this evening, she has had a stent and 2 balloons put into the blocked artery. What else do I need to expect now? She is currently in recovery x

Thank you so much for your kind words. It’s just a big shock x

Dear thankyouBHF

Hello and a warm open arms welcome to you.

I am so sorry that you had to find us in such a shocking way and as I type I am thinking of you both as your journey goes on.

It sounds like mum is in a good place at the moment with not only having the operation done but will be monitored for any other problems(should there be any)

Its now a time thing and as Thatwasunexpected has mapped out for you, your mums ongoing treatment will be geared to her and her recovery.

You must look after yourself as this shock can send all sorts of negative waves around the family and your job will be to turn them into positive ones.

Your mum has full support at the moment, especially from her daughters love, please just make sure that you get some as well and if we can help then please just ask.

You are both in my prayers

Sorry to hear about your Mother and i hope she is recovering well. The stents should certainly help a lot and providing her other arteries are reasonably clear of calcification and she is taking her blood thinners she may well feel much better moving on.

Her GP should monitor her closely with annual scans etc so please ensure they do.

Stay safe…

Welcome to a group that none of us wanted to join.

As others have said, it’s extremely early days and far too soon to know how long your mum’s recovery will take. However, stents are amazing things and she should start to feel better soon.

The main thing you can do is provide emotional support and encouragement. It is a huge shock to everyone but modern medical science is absolutely incredible. Provided your mum follows all the advice regarding diet, exercise/rehab and medication, she should hopefully see a steady improvement over time.

I do hope your mum starts to feel better soon.

From personal experience, in a couple of days she will be sent home with a huge bag of tablets and absolutely no advice. A discharge letter that will probably need a medical degree to understand. She and you will be in shock. What helped me most was asking my GP to explain what it all meant and what I should or shouldn't do because the hospital told me nothing all. At first just resting and pottering about the house will be enough but then encourage her to take short ( Very short) walks.- just round the garden at first. In about 3 weeks she should hear from Cardiac rehab but I'm not sure what delays there are just now. She shoudl meet a nurse who will explain what she needs to do and if possible attend rehab classes where she should do supervised gentle exercise. She could well have side effects from the tablets but her GP will help with those. There are plenty of alternatives. Any chest pain phone 999. Don't hesitate.

Hi, I am sorry to hear the news, based on my own experience, I had a mild HA last March, I had 2 ops and 4 stents put in. The first few weeks I was really exhausted and needed sleep. The heart is recovering and needs to heal. Stress and doing basic stuff caused mild chest pains so look out for that, she will need to take things easy. 20 mins walking a day only for the first week.

Every twinge or pain can make your mind race with dark thoughts try and keep calm and work out what it is before you panic or cause panic, they give you a spray to use, make sure she always has it with her it can save her life if she needs it. Also use the NHS help line if needed, they can talk you through what ever is going on or even arrange an ambulance. But never ignore it or let her grin and bare it which a lot of people do and things can go wrong quickly, rest use the spray and take action if needed.

I also had a big bag of tablets and I take 6 a day. We need them so I just take them as planned. I was off work for 4 weeks but some go back after 2 weeks.

After 3 months I was invited to join Cardio Re hab a easy exercise group where they monitor you as you do soft exercise, you can see a sample on Youtube. The exercise lasted 6 months and was a real boost so ask for a class in your area.

I know that my life has changed and I need to do a good warm up before I start anything difficult but I am still here. My brother had a HA over 10 year ago and is fully recovered and there are 1,000s more who are survivors as well.

It is a shock but she is still here and will be home soon. I feel so lucky and count my blessings, if you need anymore info this is a great group who will help.

Take care!
