Getting back to exercise

Good Morning you lovely lot, this is my first post. My husband who we thought was quite fit, very active, military man of 36 years had a heart attack in Jan - 3 stents later is wanting to get back to his exercise. The issue is he’s not had rehab yet waiting on physiotherapist but is wanting to do more than walking any suggestions? Can he go for a jog yet? A bike ride? We have no idea what he can or cannot do so pointers would be more than helpful. And I for one would be most grateful as my Namaste 🙏 is not staying at the moment 😂Peace, Love & Light x

Good morning. I could not get rehab, due to pandemic. But I did have breathing exercises, which take five minutes, seated. And a slow walk, whilst chatting, One option is to contact the BHF nurses on this site. The other option is to speak to the nurses at the hospital.

I was lead to believe that exercises were crucial and not to be delayed. Two years on, I still do these little exercises. Walking is important, pottering around the garden is not sufficient.

Hi Colin

Thank you 🙏 I will call see what they suggest I didn’t know I could do that x we have been walking but he’s chomping at the bit to get going. Namaste

NHS patients should be placed onto a cardio rehab programme post HA. The arrangements for this most likely carried out by specialist nurses from your local hospital. In theory they will get in touch in due course. If your husband is getting impatient this is what I said in reply to a similar post regarding recovery which might be relevant......

Next what do your discharge notes say about your ongoing care plan?

Armed with that information you could try to get hold of one of the cardiology dept medical secretaries at the hospital where you were treated and see what they say. Whilst unable to offer medical opinions they can usually help with queries about process.

Finally you could talk to the BHF Heart Helpline, who will be able to offer general guidance.

I was very fit pre heart attack cardiac arrest and 1 stent. Caused by a blood clot. That was last day of July last year. Getting back into fitness will depend if your husband has been left with any muscle damage or reduced ejection fraction which will impact on activity and take longer. Rehab should assess and advise. Can you contact them? I’m getting back but it’s very slow as I’ve been left with both of the problems mentioned above. I’ve changed my mental approach to exercise and do a mixture of things. I started in the gym January but under supervision from a cardiac trained trainer. I’m now also swimming 110 lengths a week ( manned pool) and do Pilates. I was going to a warrior type gym and walking miles pre all this. You have to be carful not to over do it as that’s certainly going to catch you out if you do. Good luck.
