Are any of you on 80% Statins, if so, does it make you open bowels several times daily, the outcome being, I have lost a lot of weight.

High Statin Dose
Hi I have been on that dose for nearly 3 years and it not a problem I have
I would suggest you see your GP to rule other causes out ,
Hello
I am having problems with my bowels and even though I need further tests I did ask my Doctor about the medications I take
I am on a lower dose of statin than you I tried 80mg but could not tolerate it so I now take 40mg but my Doctor did tell me that statins can for some cause loose bowels
Have a word with your Doctor they may change your statin or reduce the dose to see if that makes a difference
Let us know how you get on x
Hi GuysI was always on 10mg and purely taken to keep my cholesterol in order and delicate though it may be, my bowels are not loose, I simply go a lot but stools are normal.
Hello
10mg is a pretty low dose but if it managing your Cholesterol then that is all you need
I think if sometimes we are getting side effects rather than giving up on them as we need them for a healthy heart if with our Doctors we could agree to try a lower dose that could keep our Cholesterol down but at the same time we do not suffer side effects would be a good way to try and resolve this
Hope you are keeping well x
A lot of information from Gloucestershire NHS

Very Interesting x
Your bio says you have been on a statin for 30 years. Was that Atorvastatin or another statin, and at what dose?
I have been on statins for a dozen years now - mainly Atorvastatin. Whilst loose bowels can be a side effect this is rare. You say you are on a bucket load of meds. As suggested by Rose54 you need to discuss this with your GP and maybe have a medication review at the same time.
Dear frenchman96
80 mg here as well, with no sides, to be honest if I’m not careful I put the weight on more now than ever.
Hi Frenchman96. I am now on 80mg Atorvastatin and am having similar problem, but I’m not losing weight. Only side effect I have noticed from meds since having HA and Bypass in May but I didn’t know which medication would be the cause. 🤷♀️I’m on Omeprazole too.
I’ve got a GP telephone appointment next week about something else but will mention this now.
If you are losing weight without trying I think I would speak to your GP.
Take care
I've been on Atorvostatin 80mg for nearly 2.5 yrs without a problem. I spoke with my gp last week about reducing as my cholesterol is only 2.6. I was told that I'm on such a high dose due to having such a big HA. The statins help prevent having another HA.
I’m on that dose. Have been for 3 years witn no such effects. You must talk to your GP.
Hi am on 80mg for a year now also have Crohn’s and they don’t cause me any problems 🙂👍
Hi frenchman96, if you are losing weight without trying you should speak to your GP.Hubby has been on 80mg Atorvastatin since 2007 with no noticeable ill effects.

Hi, I have been on 80mg Atorvastatin since my HA in 2018. I also take Omeprazole, and maximum dose Bisoprolol, Perindopril and others with no side effects thanks goodness. If anything the reverse is true but definitely depends on diet. I ensure I have veg, fruit, fibre as otherwise I have a problem. I like to top up my heart healthy cereal with 3-4 prunes which keeps me on an even keel. As others have advised you need to raise this with your GP. Good luck.
80mg of atorvastatin doesn't cause me any issues, but 30mg of lanzoprazole did. I have to say I quite enjoyed the easy weight loss, but my dose was cut to 15mg and now I'm back to dieting...!
It does seem that a drugs side effects vary so much from person to person and also when you are on a big mix of meds then it is hard to say which does which. I am on 80mg Atorvastatin - have been for more years than I would like to admit. No really identifiable side effects
I’ve been on 80 for 2 years … I had the equivalent of IBS for ages initially but all has settled and I’m just fine now. No detectable side effects
I was put on Simvastatin when I first got put onto statins. I reacted horrendously with rampant diarrhoea and the GP changed the statin to Atorvastatin. I've been fine with that ever since.Have a word with your GP and I hope things start to calm down.
All the very best. Jan xx
Hi Guys....What a response, I thank you all and am a firm believer that although we will all admit to not knowing as much as the medical profession, we are or have been sufferers so the amount of information from so many people is tremendous and helpful, thanks again. For the record, these are my meds which I bet most of you will be taking. I am due to have my 80mg reduced to 40mg then on it for life.
ASPIRIN 75MG
ATORVASTATIN 80MG
BISOPROLOL 1.25MG
CLOPIDOGREL 75MG
LANSOPRAZOLE 30MG (as soon as I get upP
CANDESARTAN 2 MG (ditto)
I have been on Statins for more years than I care to remember and have now been on 80mg Atorvastatin for about 9 years now with no side effects, (used to be on 40mg). I think Statins like many other medications, some people are OK and have no problems whilst others do have side effects. Best to discuss with you doctor as there are other Statins than Atorvastatin or maybe it is the dose that is the problem, or could there be another cause. My bowel problems were due to Microscopic Colitis and not the Statins. Hope that you can get it sorted. Best wishes.
Hi, I’m on 80mg since last year and Lansoprozole and find I am the opposite. I need to take laxatives and drink 2 litres of water everyday. Everyone reacts differently
Hi.Been on 80mg for 10 months now and yes i do seem to go to the toilet more, but as someone who has IBS and always had problems going i don't worry about it.x
After my heart attack and numerous problems with side effects from the tablets I realised I'd lost a lot of weight. IT's always been pretty static so I didn't ever weigh myself but when it came to summer and I got my skirts out, t hey all fell off. I had also developed the opposite problem to y ours; bad constipation. I went to the doctor about that not the weight but he happened to ask about my weight and when he realised I'd lost 2 stone he immediately booked me for a CT scan and a sigmoidoscopy. He said ANY change in weight or bowel habit should be reported immediately. Thankfully all my results were clear. I have very bad spinal problems so I can only assume that the change of diet after the HA and lack of exercise had caused the weight loss. I hadn't had a massively bad diet but my husband insisted on pies, puddings , cakes and lots of meat meals. I'd started replacing the meat with lots of veg, swapped to quorn ( in meals where he didn't realise) and I had cut out ALL cakes and biscuits and my nightly bag of crisps. Please do mention your problem to the doctor. YOu may just need your tablet changing b ut better safe than sorry
Hi. I’m on 80mg a day. I have to open my bowels frequently but in a dry, constipated fashion. All of my heart meds have this as a side effect. Not pleasant!
I am on 80mg of Atorvastatinand was told it’s not just to reduce cholesterol but to stabilise any plaque in the arteries to prevent HA. I have no problems taking 80mg and was on 20mg before aortic valve replacement Oct ‘21.
