Atorvastatin

I am one week into Atorvastain 20mg. I am getting full headaches, a few palpitations and tingling and cold fingers and feet. Does this go away once the body is used to the drug. I don’t want to end up with permanent nerve damage.

Thanks for any help.

I’ve been on Atorvastatin for nigh on 20 years. So long ago I can’t remember the dose I started on, but after my HA in February 2020 the cardiologist over a period of a few months increased it to 80mg. It’s the size of a horse tablet.

Personally I’ve never experienced your side effects from the Atorvastatin. I had muscle cramps which go away after a couple of weeks.

There’s a lot of debate around statins, often strongly for or against, and I’m in no position to advise. I can only say I’m very well on 80mg.

The only other thing I’d add. Some years ago I had cause to see a neurologist and he told me that he took statins and that every one of his friends who are doctors, along with every other doctor he’d met on seminars etc was also taking statins.

Just to reiterate, this is just my own experience.

Dear JJ909

Sorry to hear your problems with atorvistatin, but you have all the side effects that are listed on the medications leaflet.

I am on 80mg at night and have been lucky with no side effects and yet many like yourself have suffered.

Most side effects seem to demise after time, but having said that many suffer with them for longer.

It’s back to this “individual “ thing,

The good news is there are many other drugs that do the same job that may agree with your body better.

Keep your Dr/team informed as they cannot change what the don’t know

Take care

They put me on 80mg straight away after having a stent put in in March. I haven’t noticed any of those side effects.

I am also on 80mg after having HA and 1 stent and I feel the cold a lot more and ends of fingers but this lathe increase seems to be the amount the doctors agree on to keep our blood thin.

I’m into my third week on 20mg, not got same side effects as you but I have had horrendous ones that now seem to be subsiding gradually apart from increased tinnitus and gastric reflux, I’m hoping after a month these will also subside or I may ask to reduce dose to 10mg. Good luck x

Hi, I was put on 80mg of atorvastatin, for the first few months I had terrible night cramps and headaches. However they did pass, so I hope your side effects soon pass too. X

Hi, I was on 40mg Simverstatin because of cholesterol levels of around 7.I had been on them for 8 months when out of the blue had a very very mild heart attack and immediately two stents fitted.

The cardiologist team put me on to 80mg atorvastatin every night before bed along with 5 other meds throughout the day.

Although I carried on walking Ihad all the side effects especially joint pains kept at it and it took about six months of pain then within another month all disappeared and now 🤞no pain or symptoms whatsoever.

I do consider myself lucky but talk with your cardiologist team or your GP.

PS my cholesterol now on a normal diet and the 80 mg tablet ongoing is around 3.5 total cholesterol.

Atorvastatin didn't suit me at all but my GP simply swapped it for simvastatin; one which didn't suit my husband at all. Swings and roundabouts. What suits one doesn't suit all but here are plenty of alternatives. Just speak to your GP.

Hi, I have been taking Atorvastatin for nearly 15 years and I did have the headaches but after awhile they started to get better and then finally disappeared. So stick with them and I hope the side effects get better soon.

I also started on Atorvastatin, and found it disagreed with me. I was swapped to Simvastatin and have been on 40 mgs daily for about 5 years, with no problems. I have heard of several people swapping to a different statin in this way.
