What can I eat after a heart attack
A Mediterranean-style diet seems to be recommended. Lots of veg, salad and fruit, fish, and small amounts of meat. Avoid heavily-processed foods, which tend to be high in fat, salt and sugar. Wholemeal bread and pasta are better than thing made with white flour. There is plenty of advice and suggestions on diet on the BHF website.
Thanks for your reply, rather hear from people in this group as Google is no help one site tells you it’s fine to eat such & such where as another says not to😫 it’s confusing, just trying to stay alive 👍
Hello and welcome to the forum!
As said by @RufusScamp earlier the BHF recommend a Mediterranean diet. For variety I recommend :
Delicious Dishes for Diabetics - A Mediterranean Way of Eating by Robin Ellis
Although aimed at Type II diabetics it is suitable for all as it follows the principles of a Mediterranean diet. It is also suitable for Type I and Type 1.5 diabetics. The only fault I have with the book is that I count carbs and the recipes do not contain the carb content leaving me to work it out. I am in favour of carb counting.
Thanks A pizza once a month def would be a change 👍
I hate fish!!! But I eat salmon 2 to 3 times a week after my MI and surgery due to tbe omega content also nuts are good for the heart but keep them to the minimum as they are full of calories. Fruit and veg is the obvious one, more of! And I now eat more plant based foods than I used to...and as above a pizza once in a while
It is amazing what an exciting and varied diet you can have, even when existing on a limited number of ingredients! One of our favourite meals is chicken with roast vegetables, with these being a limited few potatoes, chunky slices of onion, peppers, mushrooms etc. all in a flat baking tray, drizzled over with extra virgin olive oil. The chicken we partially cook in the micro wave before laying it on top of the roast veg for the final 15 to 20 mins. of the bake, then immediately prior to serving we squeeze over the entire dish a goodly amount of lemon juice... yumyum Simple variants on the same dish can be achieved by using salmon
A good place to start is to stop eating all processed foods, especially margarines, or any foods labbeled low fat. Eat raw, or boil, but don't deep fry, instead shallow cool fry in EV olive oil. After that the Mediterranean diet, or look at what the French eat (and how they eat) as they have one of lowest levels of heart disease in the world and the lowest of all in Europe. It goes without saying that I refering to the traditional Med and French diets, as many are heading down the American route to obesity. Most of all enjoy your food and enjoy your life, you have been given a second chance, so avoid stress, get regular exercise and be happy.
Hi ali , for me , I eat fruit all day until dinner time , recently my dinner ( tha past two nights ) have been super noodles , then I go to bed with one packet of crisps and a small bag of chewy sweets . I used to go to bed with 3/5 packets of crips and a big bag o sweets . It’s all about cutting down the bad stuff . I feel that if you try and cut out everything you like straight away chances are you will fail . It’s better to take baby steppes as with everything in life . I still have take a ways , still love a Chinese but due to my meds I really can’t eat a full meal anymore. I tried the med diet and it didn’t work for me , I loath fish and I loath salads so forget that for me anyway. I’m a chef by trade so I kinda know a lot of dietary needs . A little of what you love won’t do any harm just don’t sit down to a Burger King whopper every night . Balance is the key .

Hi Ali - i’ve researched all the main diets and my favorite source comes from a British cardiologist, Aseem Malhotra. He studied the people of Pioppi Italy which has the lowest rates of heart disease in the world. He also illuminates a lot of the false research and gives clear concise understanding of nutrition. His book, the Pioppi Diet is fantastic. You can also find him on YouTube and see his incredible insights firsthand. He is quite well-known and has spoken at length to the British Parliament about the nutritional needs of citizens.
Enjoy!
