Heart rate has lowered..?

Hi guys. I've been on a combo of blood pressure drugs for a few years now. I've recently lost weight and I'm walking and exercising more. My heart rate has started to slow down to low 50s resting where it wad 60s before. Im getting a bit worried. Could it be that one of the tablets is doing it? I'm on bisoprolol 5mg, amlodipine 5mg and losartan 50mg.

Thanks

Low 50’s is fine as long as you have no symptoms, it is prob as your fitness has improved, but I would suggest you call your GP practice and ask for a meds review, explain you are concerned that your HR has dropped. The review will prob be with a clinical pharmacist but could be a GP depends on your local area.

I'm ok right now but do get a bit dizzy. I do need a review so I will get in touch with them. I've also stopped drinking caffeine so maybe it's a whole bunch of stuff lol x

It is more likely that your blood pressure has improved too and your bp meds need tweaking, especially with weight loss too.

Hopefully when you have the meds review it’ll be a positive based on improving your health via healthy diet and exercise 👍 - I’d be interested to know. Ive just started back at the gym and I’m following Slimming World and the NHS Couch to 5k. I used to jog/walk before my problems started, but my diet wasn’t great.

When you write that you have recently lost weight, in what context do you mean? Were you previously overweight and are now getting towards what should be your ideal weight or do you need to get some more off?As you no doubt know excess weight can have a massive influence on your health.

The low 50's or even lower is fine, just as long as it relates to your increased fitness and pro-rata the strength of your heart and the rest of your body.

If you are on a lot of meds, then definitely you need to get them regularly assessed even if you become a thorn in the sides of your local health practice and if you haven't done it already, make yourself fully aware of what each drug does and the associated potential side effects and with which other drugs they can be safely taken with and if you are concerned, then ask why something is being prescribed.

Similarly to you, I have dizzy spells and have been losing weight to improve my health. My blood pressure and heart rate have gone down down. so I asked the doctor if I could stop taking bisoprol and my dizziness has improved.

That's brilliant!!I'd be over the moon if mine dropped to that level and I still felt fit and healthy.

Your heart rate is fine but I would ask to stop the beta blocker to get it up by about 10 beats. Low HB tends to attenuate the feel of ectopics and can even trigger AFib.

It does not lower BP by a significant amount. Perhaps by 7 points.

I am not sure all of that is correct. They prescribe beta blockers for people with AFib. I would leave it up to the GP or specialist.

I am correct and I did not say she must change anything. I advised her to ASK to have an alteration.

The OP stated in her post that she takes a beta blocker. Beta blockers are not only for AFib. They are mostly used for BP in conjunction with another type of BP drug.

Thanks guys. I will definitely talk to gp. I have lost a stone, still have a long way to go but I have cut out most "bad" stuff and eating alot healthier. I'm also walking more than I did.

Bisoprolol's job is to reduce your pulse rate. It does so by limiting The heart's take up if adrenaline etc So indirectly it can reduce BP.

When I took it 2.5mga day it got my resting hr down to around 60.

I came off it a month ago gradually. Now my HR is 75. It might be worth talking to your cardiologist about reducing your meds

My resting rate is in the low 50s. It actually drops over the day and can slip into the upper 40s by evening, but I have no issues from this other than occasional dizziness after sitting relaxing for a while. Part of my medication is 1.25mg of Bisoprolol which I take with my other medication in the morning. I was initially on 3.75mg, reduced on request from myself to 2.5mg to reduce the dizziness and then reduced again after consultation with the pharmacist at the GP practice.

As you take 5mg, I would say there is scope for a reduction. You might also ask your GP why you are on both Amlodipine and Losartan.
