Hi Maggie2009!

I was taken off Atenolol last year because of what they now call Vasospastic Angina (coronary artery spasm) after being on them for 9 years. I was on 100mg dose for blood pressure as I dont get on with statins. I found my heart rate was all over the place and my lips went blue a lot as the dose was reduced. I also found I was getting a lot of headaches.

It didnt last long it was just my body adjusting. I am now on a low dose of Bisoprolol to help lower my heart rate. Turns out I can't tolerate a lot of blood pressure meds but oddly never had an issue with Atenolol!

Hope this helps you 😊

Thank you. Glad you didn’t have too many withdrawal issues. I didn’t take it long so did not taper down. Keep getting elevated heart rate and weakness. Only been 6 days. Hoping it doesn’t last too long.

Hopefully you'll find things start to calm down in a week or two. 😊

Hi. I'm just about to start Atenolol having been taken off Carvedilol as that seemed to affect my vision. Just wondering if you had any vision problems whilst on Atenolol?

Hi Dossy,

I can honestly say I had no side effects whatsoever and I'd been on them 8yrs before having to be weaned off them last year.

It was only when they had to drop the dosage each time to wean me off them that I had a few issues but they didn't last long.

I think I originally started on a 25mg dose but after a few months or so I was on 50mg and stayed on that dose for years before being bumped up to 100mg for the last 2 yrs of being on it.

Fingers crossed you won't have any issues 🤞🤞

Did you switch to another med or have an ablation or just discontinue beta blockers all together?

Because I have what they now call Vasospastic Angina (Coronary Artery Spasm/Prinzmetal Angina) beta blockers are an antagonist for this condition apparently which is why I had to come off them. Although I have been on 2.5mg of Bisoprolol to try and keep heart rate under control since October but these make me feel dizzy for a few minutes after taking them so have to make sure I'm sat down. I can't tolerate Ramipril or Losartan which is why I got put on Atenolol for blood pressure. But also can't tolerate Diltiazem or Verapamil so getting a bit of a list of heart meds I have a bad reaction to!!
