I am on the usual cocktail of meds for heart, does anyone know if any of them could be responsible for hair loss, and which ones?

Think you need to list what meds, as the 'usual' cocktail rarely remains the same for everyone and they all have different side effects.

You could also check the info on EMC for each of the meds you are on

Thanks for the reply, at the moment I take Atenolol, Losartan, Asprin, Felodipine, and furosemide. I also am on prednisolone and rituximab infusions for rheumatoid arthritis (34 Years), insulin dependant and metformin. In the last year the hair loss has been significant. I will check the EMC for info as well. Thanks again.

Has your thyroid been tested properly and as you take metformin your vitamin B12 should also be tested, as metformin impedes absorption of some vitamins.

Its usually a statin , cholesterol med, but I have fine hair and have been on the cocktail since 2011, I still have hair. Nobody actually notices. Just frustrating having hair floating around all the time. Take care.

Thanks for the reply. I have always had thick curly hair, in the last year loss has been significant. Just a bit down about it. I’m on lots of other meds for diabetes and RA as well, so I’ll just have to accept it. Take care

I raised this issue with my cardiologist after two nasty spates of bad palpitations that reduced me to a near blathering idiot and depression. She said hair loss often comes about after bad health and can return as you recover....no guarantee though.

Thanks for the reply, have had poor health last few years, as well as several heart issues, diabetes and RA, so quite a cocktail of meds. Probably unavoidable. Thanks, take care

Stress causes hair loss. Caffeine shampoos are supposed to help. My son has this problem.

I don’t think any of the meds would specifically cause hair loss. I’m a bloke so not supposed to worry about such things :) but I bought some hair thickening shampoo which has amazing results, I got massive hair now .. so now that’s sorted I’m thinking about my eyesight, is that impaired by my cocktail ::)) there’s always something Binnick ... oh, and my hearing , is that effected ahhh Keep doing your recommended amount of exercise and have as much fun as you can ... I try ... best of health to you

What hair thickening shampoo do you use? I could do with some of that.

I’ve always had fine hair but a lot of it, now there isn’t as much! I’ve just ordered some thickening shampoo and conditioner so will see if that does anything. Of course not having my hair cut since mid November hasn’t helped either. Thankfully I finally get to go next week!

I’m on the usual cocktail for heart failure.

I’ve always had fine hair too which is getting even thinner. I blame Losartan for this.

I’ve been on Losarton for more years than I can remember. My hair has always been fine but I used to have a lot more of it.

My husband is on Spironolactone for his diuretic. One of the side effects of that is to promote hair growth. He was told it’s also used in hair loss clinics. Perhaps discuss with your doctors whether it’s possible to change to Spironolactone from Furosemide to counter the hair loss side effect of one/some of the drugs cocktail you’re on. These two diuretics work differently, so changing might not be suitable for you.

All the best.

Hi - I have checked the patient info leaflet & it seems that the statin is responsible ( on a low dose of Pravastatin) not the Losartan as I thought.

I am on 40mg atorvastatin, about 8years, looks like the guilty culprit! Will investigate alternatives. Thanks for the info.

I think the stress of heart disease and other diseases can have major effect. Prior to heart disease and last year's amputation I had brown hair with a few flecks of grey, and now it's grey with a few flecks of brown! The social worker wi probably make me white! ☹️
