Hi, I would like to know if there is someone here who had stents put in or by pass and is working out as if nothing had happened, I mean, training really hard, getting weights.

Hi

It depends on each person. I’ve had 8 ‘elective’ stents since 2012. In Nov I had an ‘elective’ quadruple bypass. I have always been physically active and never suffered a cardiac arrest thankfully 🤲🏼. Have just completed #C25k🏃running programme which I started 12 weeks after my bypass procedure, I played my first game of football yesterday for a whole hour. I have also recently started very light weights. In summary, I am being very active but never start any exercise without careful consultation with my cardiologist, GP and cardiac rehab team. We are all different with differing CVD conditions so take advice from professionals on what type of activity and level of intensity would be appropriate for you. My example will not suit others and vice versa. Hope this helps and good luck!

I think the main question is, is this 'elective' surgery or 'post event'?

I had an OOH SCA followed by a Triple Bypass, took me a long time to recover ~2.5 years.

I am now training at ~65% of what i was lifting before, I weighed ~75kg before, now I weigh ~65kg, always trained to gain mass and put weight on.

As an example I used to DB Curl 22kg now 14kg.

I think I could probably get nearer to what I used to lift, but I now do a lot more Cardio which I think is holding me back on the weights.

If it is 'elective' then I can't see why, after the recovery period, you couldn't get back to where you were before.

A couple of things, post Bypass It took me a long time before I would try a couple of exercises again, namely Cross bench pullovers, bench press, flys, pec deck. Also, meds play a part, potential side effects can cause fatigue/tiredness, muscle soreness etc.

Hi, I didn’t have any ever, just plague in ALA, 24 calcium score. But I’m lifting as much weight as I can.

So are you looking at an ‘elective’ procedure and have been given the choice?

I had a bypass operation (but, to Gaz_chop's point, never had a heart attack), within a year I was exercising fairly seriously at a gym three or four times a week. In terms of weights I'm maybe at 90% of PB, but I'm also getting older and in my younger days I was playing rugby at county level, so I guess that's only to be expected!

Open heart surgery is pretty savage in terms of the trauma to your chest muscles, it would be foolish to expect to bounce back in just a few weeks. But with patience I think many people can look forward to recovering a lot of their former strength and stamina.

Good luck!
