Work out your CHA2DS2-VASC and HAS-BLED scores. These allow the doctor to decide your risk of having a stroke related to your atrial fibrillation.

Thanks for reply. How do I work out these scores? New on here.

The doctor will have worked out your risk, which depends on a number of factors but age is one of them. If they say you should be on blood thinners then it is because your risk of stroke is higher than your risk of side effects from the medication. In the end nobody can force you to take them, but the new blood thinners now are not like taking Warfarin, there’s no regular blood monitoring or watching what you eat.

It appears that blood thinners are quite easily prescribed in arrhythmia cases these days. I had an atrial flutter over a year ago for which I had a cardioversion and which seems not to have returned since. But the cardiologist wants me to continue the bloodthinner, Apixaban in my case. Apart from somewhat increased bleeding when I cut myself, there are no side effects, so I’m ok with it.

If you give a little more detail, what caused the condition, was it a one off event?

well my doctor described it to me, theoretically In atrial fibrillation, the chaotic rhythm may cause blood to pool in your heart's upper chambers (atria) and form clots.

if i remember correctly.

hence why some people my need anticoagulants.
