Just over 15 weeks...

So my heart valve replacement was just over 15 weeks ago. Im still a bit achy at times but guessing that is normal. I have decided to go back to running (aka a slow jog if you can call it that) so starting from scratch again!!! Couch to 5k downloaded.

Well done for taking on the challenge. Hope you are doing well since your op. Just go super super slow and don’t worry about how slow you are moving... listen in to your body at all times and don’t think twice about pausing the program if you need to. Good luck... I have gone through running phases and done a couple of 10ks and then stopped and started from scratch again and stopped again. Today was difficult at first but am so glad I've done it. You inspired me x

Hi , am 9 weeks post AVR via OHS and have started jogging on treadmill. Been back light weight training fir a couple of weeks with long walks everyday for cardio rehab.

It feels great to get back training. Monitor my heart rate during training sessions and no abnormal rates so far. Good luck with the jogging.

Hi there so pleased to hear your news that your recovery is going well. I'm waiting a mitral valve replacement or repair I'm not sure. I just received through the post some MRSA testing kits and wondering if this means that my operation is imminent. Am petrified, of course, especially because of the pandemic and living alone and needing a friend to come and stay with me. But your letter and the other two replies have at least made me feel a bit better as you all seem to be recovering so well. Thank you so much will get back to the group once I hear about a date because I know I will need your support and that it is here on this site for all of us xxx

I honestly surprised myself and my family how quickly I was up and about after my operation. You can do this and you will feel better for it. It won't be overnight but you will get there x

Hi Funnyfennel, it does certainly sound like your operation is fast approaching, as they are obviously checking your are MRSA free.

I have been through OHS twice, the first in 2016 for a Mitral Valve repair and again in 2019 for a replacement. Although I can fully understand you being petrified, as you are putting yourself in the hands of others, albeit incredibly skilled and it is daunting. But I certainly do not regret going through either procedures because of the wonderful staff within the NHS who ensure your stay and recovery go as smooth as possible. At the time it can seem a very slow process but as everyone on here say, always listen to your body and now I look back they were relatively brief periods in my life. I don't say this to worry you at all, but be prepared for the unexpected complication, which I now know are all part of the individual's recovery. Again the staff will have seen it all before and deal with them so calmly and reassuringly.

I hope this helps reassure you from a patients perspective, but if you have any specific questions about Mitral Valve repair or replacement, please do ask away. I am not not medically trained but can certainly speak from experience, if you feel that will help you?

Hi Pauline, just to ask about bras. Is it necessary to buy one to take into hospital. I have ordered one but I'm not sure about the fit. any advice?

Morning,I didn’t take one into hospital, did wear one to come home in! Some hospitals put you in one in ICU mine didn’t, maybe a question before your op? As for fit I had the same size as usual, the ones I bought had so many fastenings down the front had to put my glasses on to see I was getting them lined up😂

Remember you will be ok, just take your time and do all the exercises they give you.
