We are all doomed?

Peta Bee has been writing about early mortality and exercise in the Times on Tuesday and has picked out some useful information .

According to the Vitalty insurance company there has been a 34% drop in the number of people attaining 7,000 steps in the first 3 weeks of January. So what?

Well - New research states that more and more of us are becoming resistant to exercise and developing metabolic problems. Prof Coyle of the University of Texas has been running trials on exercise levels , (published in Sport and exercise ). The question he asked was

"Can you control blood sugar and blood fat oxidisation levels by reducing blood fats levels after exercise? "

Yes you can . BUT if you do an hours run and sit on your butt for the rest of the day, it just does not happen. Even worse, If you drop from taking 10,500 steps a day to less than1,300 steps by sitting around , there will be a sharp drop in your metabolism.

Insulin secretion becomes less effective and sugar is no longer driven from the blood to be used in the muscles and the risk of type 2 diabetes increases. Your blood starts to become more viscous and sticky. Plasma triglycerides start to damage blood vessels. Blocked arteries slowly but surely start their destructive clogging process.

The negative responses can start within 48 hours.. Keep not exercising for 2 weeks and your muscle mass will start to go as well, even amongst youngsters.

Prof Paul Greenhaff (Nottingham University) "Despite all the evidence most people remain unaware that the risks of taking too few steps can be catastrophic"

DOOMED - well perhaps not. The cure is simple. The minimum range for warding off exercise resistance and improving your fat metabolism is 5.000 - 8500 steps a day and more is better. The more you move - the more you live.
