Heart Failure Stages
When you get an echocardiogram the consultant will give you the EF function. Anything below 40% is classed as heart failure, This is just a measurement of how much blood you heart is pumping and a technical qualification of heart failure,What the doctors are more interested in is how a patient manages on a day to day basis, for this they use the New York Heart Association classification system (see link). Basically they look to see where you fit within the 4 groups. People can have an EF that is at a constant number but they can move from class1 to 2 to 3 and back to 1 again - a well titrated medication regime and life style changes can have a major influence of where you are in the classification system.
A lot of places use the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification. This is based on symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue and exercise tolerance. It ranges from Class 1 (minimal) to Class 4 (severe symptoms at rest). My Drs included it in reports.
