Melatonin for sleep depravation
Hi all does anyone have experience of... - British Heart Fou...
Hi all does anyone have experience of taking prescribed melatonin for sleep? No sleep due to heart palpatations etc
Yes I have tried Melatonin , they didn't work for me. I tried Nytol as well which worked better but you get used to them after about 10 days so are less effective.. Good luck.
Had it when in hospital, worked. Had forgotten about that might help with my ectopics.
I find Melatonin great to help me sleep - it was prescribed when seeing a consultant for an underlying condition. It was prescribed to be taken 5 days out of 7. When my heart problems started this year I checked that it was still OK to take it and was told I could do so.
My son was on 6 times the adult dose when he was 13 and it was great for him. It was the only thing that worked to help him sleep due to nonstop hallucinations caused by his brain tumour
Thank you so much for all the helpful replies to my question much appreciated. Have a lovely Christmas.. x
I have tried melatonin in the past but it didn't work. I found that Zzzquil seemed to work okay. On November 3rd I had an aortic valve replaced, and during my recovery a nurse told me that melatonin is better because Zzzquil's effectiveness will wear off over time. He also said that sometimes you have to take it for a few nights before it begins working. So I followed his advice, and it took about 3 nights, but I noticed after that that the melatonin really seems to improve the length and quality of my sleep. It is non-prescription here (Austin TX) and I take the 12 mg tablet.
Thank you for that very helpful reply, I will research thanks. Sometimes I find my fellow heart mates on here are more in touch with what might help than the medics! Thanks again.
Hi, 2 of my sons have Autism and are both prescribed Melatonin for sleep. Its due to not producing your own melatonin or producing only small amounts of it. Its what signals the brain to let us know its nightime. However some peolle need melatonin as a synthetic version if enough is not produced by the body. Some foods also contain melatonin but im assuming these would have to be eaten in big quantities to have any affect. If you need the melatonin then you need it but are you having the palpations looked at also?
Hi Dannic88 thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I have Mitral Valve Prolapse which causes the palpatations which affect my sleep terribly ( 2 hours max a night if I’m lucky) therefore GP has prescribed the melatonin for 13 wks as the sleep deprivation is affecting my whole life presently. Thanks again much appreciated..
