Took a good 6 weeks to feel back to normal after my pm was fitted, just take things easy.

Hi, I had a pacemaker fitted after I got complete heart block immediately following my AVR, so difficult to say what the recovery time was for the pm. I did find I was getting very breathless at the slightest exertion, but at my six week check up I was told it was because of my heart surgery. However at my next check up they found that my maximum was set very low and therefore as soon as I did anything it was hitting the max and I was getting breathless. He changed the settings and I could feel the difference just walking back to the car.

I’m sure in a few weeks you’ll feel a lot better, just take things steady.

Thanks Wendy - I had a heart beat in low 30s when I went in to A&E, they have set the pacemaker at 60, I think - got a visual check-up in 6 weeks. Feel like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards at the moment - All I want to do is sleep after minor tasks. However, I notice that I'm much improved from before the pacemaker was fitted - thankful for it, and the NHS :-)

Thank you, this is reassuring. I had a PM fitted 2 wks ago and have been very concerned at how poor my exercise tolerance is, in fact it is worse than before the procedure when I was admitted to A & E with hr around 40. Hr is set at 60, and is very rarely above that. Have contacted cardiology for advice, they say settings will be adjusted at 6 wk PM check to accomodate physical activity. I really hope so,I am a gardener by profession, I can only walk a short distance before I get breathless and extremely fatigued.

On the up side it is a huge relief not to have a heart rhythm that jumps all over the place !

I guess I have to be patient.

They’ll sort it out at your check up and tweak the settings. Just make sure you tell them about any problems/symptoms you are getting so that they can sort it out. I certainly felt a lot better after it was tweaked and was able to walk, go upstairs etc without gasping for air.
