Mva & Vasospastic angina - cardiologist questions

Had a call 2 days ago from cardiologist saying he thinks I have microvascular dysfunctionVasospastic angina. I asked him were they different conditions & he said they were the same thing but different names...? He was very rushed and I didn't think to ask him so many things. He's putting me on ranexa for a few weeks to see if that helps alleviate the pain. What questions should I ask him when I talk to him again? I'll definitely ask can I exercise as I need to lose weight altho that seems impossible atm with the chest pressure I get both at rest and moving around.

Do cardiologists usually pass you back to your gp with this condition?

Thanks!

Hi Divasong

Microvascular angina MVA effects the small vessels - microvascular dysfunction

Vasospastic angina VSA the large coronary blood vessels -coronary artery spasms

They are two separate conditions however they are both causes of Ischaemia non obstructive coronary arteries INOCA.

Most people live with just MVA, about 20 % just Vasospastic angina and 20% with both ( I have both MVA and VSA)

The treatment for the conditions is different so it is important to be given the correct diagnosis.

Sadly there is a lack of knowledge and understanding about the conditions which is reflected in the Cardiologists response to your question.

The BHF has this information about MVA and VSA

You need to be seen by a Cardiologist as MVA and VSA are complex conditions. Ask you GP to refer to a Cardiologist who has some expertise in caring for patients in MVA and VSA.
