Just received gov_uk SMS telling me to stay indoors for 12w because of “my condition”

I am 68, had my spleen removed in 1975 and a heart bypass in 2008.

Rang my surgery and nurse came back to me saying it’s probably because of my past operations as above. Does anyone know if this is correct? I can’t find anything to suggest why I am being “ shielded” as extremely high risk.

I received a text yesterday. I suffered a heart attack and cardiac arrest January 2019. I've a stent implant and have asthma. I expected to be classed as high risk but I received the text later than others. I believe it's probably due to your heart issues. Stay safe.

Hello

It will probably be due to the spleen

I have heart failure and Pulmonary hypertension and I have not had this so if you read up you will see it is more than likely due to spleen

No Spleen places you in a higher risk category but not a reason for “Shielding “/ extremely vulnerable category according to the Gov. website.

A nurse suggested (not convincingly) it must be the combination of no spleen and previous bypass but I can’t find anything regarding this and I wondered If they have made a mistake in their reasoning. I have received no letter regarding being extremely vulnerable.

I’m in a similar position as you, having had two AVR ops and a splenectomy. The latter is what places us in the high risk category because my understanding is that although our liver takes over some of the role of the spleen, it still leaves us more susceptible to infection and having a worse reaction to any infection. I’ve received several text messages ver the last few days and today received my letter. My husband is still at work as the firm he works for is classed essential, but we are taking sensible precautions, although probably not quite as stringent as they suggest.

Take care and stay safe xx
