Just seen new list of essential businesses is to include off licences. Really?

Just to say I don't have any type of vested interest as I rarely drink. However from a logistics point of view, the off licence chains have their own delivery fleet and supply chain. If they are closed people only have the option to go to food shops and supermarkets, and with no off licences their stock will be depleted and cause even more pressure on the supermarkets who are already struggling because people are buying too much food. So I'd guess that yes you can't really call an off licence essential, but if the government categorises them as such it allows them to stay open and hopefully takes some pressure off the supermarkets

Valid point i guess, just a knee jerk reaction on my part in these unsettling times. X

Good point well made that man..... I hadn't thought of that but was told by a supermarket employee that the supermarket alcohol shelves had been stripped of everything...... 😳

They have indeed, I nipped into the Sainsbury's Local up the road on Tuesday to get some milk and bread and the drinks section was totally empty

Well said, the men who empty our bins say the bins are very heavy with food being thrown away which I presume has been bought by panic buyers.

Yes there is a God x

Of course not, was thinking more of the chains that only sell booze. Corner shops that also sell drinks were already included in essential shops.

It's vital for the economy and money comes before people...

Hi Nettekin ☺

Unfortunately, in this country, we have a high % of alcoholics, functioning and non-functioning, 'who can no longer go to the pub, or the AA meetings or counselling. They can't go cold turkey either because they will probably die from organ failure.

Along with the millions of people who " I dont have a problem with alcohol but i need a drink to relax " can you imagine the chaos if it ran out now? I would think this has helped shaped the government thinking.

I worry for the other addicts in society, who's addiction is not legal, who can't get their fix or access support. So sad, when we lucky people are just worrying about loo rolls 😟

Take care

I think it's more about the purchasing of essential goods in supermarkets and these mentioned addicts are taking up valuable shopping time and causing a nuisance for staff.

Our local off licence also has a section which sells basics such as milk, some tinned items, loo rolls etc. They are still open with restrictions on the amount of people going in at any one time.

Social isolation requires social drinking(and virtual socialising/drinking) with friends online. So party - on : in moderation of course! Cheers!

Dont forget that that places like Bargain Booze offer more than alcohol and also allow people with pre payment meters to top up their keys and pay other bills, seems a logical move as I dont know of anywhere else locally that people can top up their gas and electric.

This situation reminds me of the cold war era. I had relatives that lived behind the iron curtain at that time before 1989. Limited food in the shops queues for food, no luxury electrical items for sale only in limited quantities, restrictions of movement.

limited cars available to the masses. They had nothing to spend their wages on except alcohol,it keeps the masses under control and avoids riots.

My heart specialist said one or two glasses of red wine would relax me and be good for my heart so I have 2 at bedtime. Our off-licence also has a few groceries.

Our loca l pubs that had to close were offering a take away service. Bring your bottle to the window and we will fil it. Not sure if they can still do that.

Wow. The UK has a major drinking problem if that's a priority. It actually shocked me how bad it is when it was announced that pubs were going to close and hundreds of thousands of people across the country flocked to all their locals to get one last pint down them - and probably got infected, too.
