Interesting article. It was encouraging to see that simple procedures can produce a surface that easily exceeds even surgical standards of cleanliness.

Thanks for posting!

I am going to use my bank card instead of cash or notes. It is easily cleaned with an antiseptic wipe each day while cash goes from hand to hand very quickly and might be a good vehicle for the virus.

Well I had always refused contactless cards but now I think they may be a good idea.

Good post. While we're on Tech - keyboards - one of the worst places for breeding germs, people never seem to think of cleaning them!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Star in reply toSpiritoftheFloyd

The advice I saw (alleged to be NHS originated) was to turn keyboard over to get out crumbs and other bits, gently hoover and wipe over with an antiseptic wipe. Before and after using the wipe you shod wash your hands. It did not say where you could get wipes! I have not seen them or sanitizer for over two weeks!

There was a YouTube video of someone making a cuppa soup with keyboard crumbs but I cannot find it now. Not recommended! 🤮

I walked down one of the wings in work some years ago and someone pulled me up saying "You're IT support, my keyboard doesn't work! " I explained that I was not IT support, but he persisted. I picked up his keyboard and turned it upside down and about 4 ozs of crumbs and other crud fell out - suggested he find a vacuum and stop eating over the keyboard in future!

Lol. I saw some truly disgusting shared and single person keyboards in my time at work - and I worked in the Pharma industry!

I used to be a programmer really but got to do everything, amazing amount of stuff in a keyboard. If you unplug it you can wash them in hot soapy water, just make very sure they are dry.

On pointless they asked an it manager what he did, he said mend lavatories and change lightbulbs. Pretty accurate. I also had to catch and evict any birds that flew into the barn, fabulous building, lots of room to fly acquirepremises.co.uk/offic...

Arrrgghh, mental image! Mental image!! (I will have a real problem forgetting that when making a mug of soup!)

I clean everything with a paper towel wet (not dripping) with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. Cordless phone (and base), keyboards, remote controls (ok yes, I have three - telly, hi-fi, DVD player that stubbornly refuses to marry up with my universal), door handles...everything.

Sunnie, can you post the ingredients again for making our own hand sanitiser. Thank you

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply toLezzers

My recipe: fill a clean and dry spray bottle with 70-90% isopropyl alcohol. (I get mine from Amazon on Subscribe and Save).

Apply liberally as needed.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toSunnie2day

Just isopropyl? Dont need to add anything to it?

Sunnie2day profile image
Sunnie2day in reply toLezzers

I don't as I use the spray for everything when I'm out from surfaces to my clothing (no, really, Germaphobe is me!) to my hands. Once my hands dry I use a little hand cream.

On a normal keyboard you can flip the keys off to get at the gunge beneath and clean the edges of the keys. Just do them one at a time and from the side of each key so you don't out them back in the wrong place. Mind is usually full of dog hair. First, witch it off, turn it upside down and smack it to get all the crumbs out

I took all the keys off a keyboard at work to give it a clean (pre-used with dust, food and coffee spills). More fun than a jigsaw! 😁

All at once? Eeek. The only one that worries me is the space bar that has several clips. I leave that alone.

I don't have a tablet apart from Lisinopril, Atorvastatin, Bisosoporal, Aspirin....... 😁

Oh and Omeprazole...

Lezzers profile image

Do you charge those tablets or do they charge you? 🤔

Cricky, that's expensive!! Won't soap & water work? Save the expensive stuff, you may be able to barter it for a pack of 4 loo rolls!!

Gladwyn profile image
Gladwyn in reply toLezzers

Crazy isn't it! I noted it also said " only 2 left!" I'm happy with my 50 p stuff and my isopropyl spray. Whoever paid that much for hand sanitiser must be very scared poor soul . ☹️

Ps There again ... for a whole pack of 4 loo rolls hmmm might be worth it 🤔🤔🤔

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply toGladwyn

😂. We can't get hand sanitiser for love or money, even willing to barter the husband, not an easy decision he makes a mean cup of tea!! Currently trying to source ingredients to make my own. 😱

Gladwyn profile image
Gladwyn in reply toLezzers

Lol oh I do like a good cuppa! Maybe we could share lol.

I've got isopropyl 90, Aloe Vera and essential oils. 2/3 to 1/3 and few drops of the oil and supposedly hey presto ! Hand sanitiser!! 2 greys put a recipie up a few days ago.

Make sure it says they get rid of viruses as well as bacteria.

Lezzers in reply tomistymolly

Sorry its still early for me!! 😂 Make sure what gets rid of viruses?

mistymolly profile image
mistymolly in reply toLezzers

The wipes you are using. I was using wipes for cleaning my counters etc but my nursing friend said they were no good because they just get rid of bacteria. It must state bacteria and viruses.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzers in reply tomistymolly

Thank you. Aren't they all just anti bacterial? Any idea which ones are also anti viral?

mistymolly profile image
mistymolly in reply toLezzers

I use Zoflora disinfectant if you google it, you will see it states bacteria and viruses. Hope this helps

I totally understand that eliminating the risk of catching the virus is very important, but what about shopping that we buy, tins, packets have been handles potentially by people who could be infected with the virus.

My husband is due in the next few weeks for an aortic valve replacement he has made the decision to isolate himself at home although we appreciate it’s not always possible for everyone. He is self employed and does not get sick pay. It’s annoying that the government have not put anything in place to help those sin the same situation.

Many thanks,

Sunnie2day in reply toJewel7

Don't laugh or think me over-the-top but when I shop I spray the trolley (yes, the whole thing), then my hands. When all my shopping is done and I'm at the till I load everything back into the trolley. At the boot I spray every single thing as I load it into boil-washed cotton carry bags.

I carry 70% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle.

Thank you. The wipes are rarer than gold dust & just as expensive at the moment! Still trying to source rubbing alcohol that I don't need to take out a mortgage to buy!!
