Hi All. Anyone on here who does heavy bag training following a heart bypass? If yes would be very interested to hear how you got on and any issues please.
Prior to my heart issues and angina I used a heavy bag and boxing training to stay in shape, something I am keen to get back into once I have recovered from my recent heart bypass op.
Hi.. You are only a couple of weeks post surgery, and at this stage it is just a case of recovering slowly and increasing your stamina by walking.
Hopefully you will be offered rehab in a few weeks and can be guided by them. For the first few weeks you should not lift anything heavier than a half full kettle or a bag of sugar. This can be increased steadily after six weeks but I would allow at least 12 weeks for the breastbone to heal fully. Hitting a heavy punchbag could damage your breastbone and having met someone at rehab with an unstable breastbone you do not want to go there. The rehab team may be able to guide you on this.
Thanks Micheal. Trust me, I'm not planning on starting heavy bag training within the next three months. To be honest, at this point I doubt I could even open my garage door to get to my heavy bag. Was just thinking ahead to when I'm hopefully healed, would be nice to think I may be able to go back to some of my old fitness routines I loved.
Interesting what you said about your friend with the unstable breastbone. Definately a situation I want to avoid.
Not really a friend as he was attempting rehab again to try and improve fitness. He only did a few weeks as the instability seemed to affect confidence. I believe the plan was that if things did not improve he would have to be opened up again, and the breastbone debrided ane rewired although in some cases they use a metal plate. Avoid!
