Hi has anyone had any teeth out whilst on blood thinners wondered how it went as blood is thinner

I had a heart attack/cardiac arrest in December 2018, while I was in hospital one of the nurses looked at a spot on my chest, got a doctor to have a look at it, and decided it needed investigation. So a week after I was discharged I was back in out patients to see the dermatologist who looked at it and said it was a basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer) and would need to be removed. I mentioned that I was on ticagrelor and aspirin to thin my blood. She went off and spoke to someone in cardiology and said that they couldn't take me off it at that early stage so would need to manage any bleeding issues.

One week later I was back for surgery to remove the BCC and all was well, or so I thought.

That night I woke up with the dressing inflated with blood - I ended up having to go back to hospital 3 times before the wound would stop bleeding.

I had an ICD implanted in August, and as I'd been on ticagrelor for 8 months it was considered safe to stop it 7 days before the procedure and then re-start it the day after.

If I was you I'd talk to the hospital to see if it is safe for you to stop for 7 days prior to the dental work, after my experience in January I certainly wouldn't entertain having a tooth out while taking anticoagulants

Thanks I've told the dentist about meds I'm on as only had a stent fitted nov 2019 as had 2 heart attacks in 15 minutes dentist said that there will be a specialist dentist doing it,

I have! ☹️ The main thing is to liase with your GP and dentist as medication may be continuous or stopped on the day but we are all different. I had no problem with excessive bleeding and continued with my normal medication.

I had a tooth extracted whilst I was on clopidogrel.

The dentist did it at the end of the day and I had to stay in the dentist's chair for 30mins afterwards to make sure there was no excessive bleeding.

I had no problems.

My hubby had the same conversation with dentist last week , had his arrest may 2019 , hes in desperate need of extractions, taking blood thinners ticagrelor 90mg twice a day plus aspirin, dentist happy to do extractions but may need a stitch or two apparently, dr advised not to stop meds.

I have had 4 teeth out I take warfarin. Talk to your Denist about it my Denist was good. I had no problems

I've had extractions and dental implants following a bypass operation, I take aspirin.

I've had different advice from different (private) dentists, including one who refused to use any anaesthetic for dental work until six months post operation. I had an "old school" filling with this dentist then changed to a different dental practise to avoid repeating the experience!

I had one extraction where I continued to take aspirin throughout, that extraction resulted in a painful condition called "dry socket". On the next extraction I stopped taking aspirin two days before the extraction and didn't resume taking it for five days afterwards. I should emphasise that this decision wasn't specifically endorsed by either my doctor or my dentist. Maybe coincidence but I didn't experience "dry socket".

You must take your own decision after sourcing as much information as possible, but at the very least I'd advise anyone having a tooth extraction while taking blood thinners to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of "dry socket", so that they might recognise the condition as early as possible if it occurs. I'd also recommend scheduling the extraction on either a Monday or a Friday in order to minimise the risk of first experiencing the symptoms over a weekend...trust me if you get it hurts and you'll want very quick access to your dentist!

Hi Your dentist should speak to the dr who prescribed the medication.

There is a balance between delaying taking out a tooth and the issues leaving it in would cause.

If there is a lot of bleeding, dentists do have special dressings they can use to stop it or if needed will send you to A&E. And yes popping in a few stitches helps.

It can also help to have the appt going into lunch or end of day so that there is extra time in case you need more time for the bleeding to stop.

First stop is for dentist to call your dr.

Hi I had a tooth out a week after my heart attack...doc didn't want me stop any meds..dentist was quite calm about it..he made sure I was seen early in day so that I could come back if any probs..he also stitched gum around where tooth had been to aid healing...no probs..no more bleeding than usual..

For a wisdom tooth extraction while on Riveroxiban I was sent to the Dental Hospital.. A waiting list of 29 weeks! They stopped the anticoagulant for that day, and all was fine. No exceptional bleeding.

As long as your INR is at a level that satisfies your dentist, it should be fine. Had to have a molar removed, but mine refused until I had my INR tested. A hole that size bleeds a LOT - not good if you're on anti-platelettes and blood thinners.

International Normalised Ratio. Basically, it tells the dentist how long it will take your blood to clot.

I am on Apixaban (plus other meds) for high BP. Last year I had a fall and broke two front teeth - one snapped at the gum line and the root then had to be removed. I did not stop my Apixaban and there was very little blood loss but I would caution that you need to watch carefully for any subsequent infection and insist on early antibiotics if you need them. I think these new anti coagulants delay healing so the process takes longer.

The dentist in my case was reluctant to prescribe antibiotics despite very obvious signs of infection and it ended up causing me further problems.

I think one of the problems is that no one seems very clear about whether or not to stop the medication. The dentist told me to check with my GP. The GP told me to insist that the dentist contact the oral-maxillary unit at the hospital for advice and confirm to me that he had done this! The dentist was clearly unwilling to do this but quoted the latest advice from the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programm:

Hello. This discussion is very relevant for me at this time. I was diagnosed with AF last summer. I’ve been taking anticoagulant Edoxaban 30mg. I also need a molar extracted. My dentist has referred me to Kings dental hospital (South London - anyone had an extraction there?). I’m advised I may wait 3-6 months before I receive appointment. Feel a bit nervous about it. I thought I’d come off anticoagulant for couple days before and after extraction. But I’ll check with dental hospital first. Thank you a Chappychap fir advice re dry socket, I’ll research that.

Hi I'm on Dabigatran and have not found a massive increase in bleeding from tooth extraction or minor medical procedures. Dentist told me to press gauze on extraction point for around 10-15mins before letting me go home.

I was due to have a tooth removed whilst on blood thinners in 2011. My dentist suggested a referral to having the removal in hospital. A dentist and two nurses were present and it was carried out in an excellent fashion. Also there was no charge for treatment and although I had to wait 2 hours, an ambulance took me back home afterwards.
