Home is Where the GIN Is!

Lezzers had Ginuary. She knew the month was too long for a Dry January!

Gym? I thought you said we were hitting the Gin after work!

Lezzers started Gin & Tonic Afternoon at work. It takes place on Thursdays. No one else knows about it!

The house may not be tidy the Gin is neat!

The first could be a Bloody Mary for breakfast!

Add an apple pie and a bag of chips and you're up to 3 of your 5 a day!!! xx

No alcohol for me at the moment (meds.... although) but I did spend a few quid on a posh bottle of alcohol free cider recently.... was disappointed that it was basically apple juiceπŸ˜€.

However, down here we have Dorset Ginger. Local traditional delicacy that comes with no instructions (like Dorset Knobs.) If you drink it neat with a spot of water it’s a substitute for whisky, especially if you like a late night dram. Do not, under any circumstances, mix it with Tonic!

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toHectorsDad

Now this makes me want to re-visit Dorset.

HectorsDad profile image
HectorsDadβ€’ in reply toLezzers

You can get it on Amazon (is there no respect.....).

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toHectorsDad

Thank you, though I am now thinking best I buy it in Dorset!

HectorsDad profile image
HectorsDadβ€’ in reply toLezzers

It is the best place to live (imho) and the heart care is excellentπŸ€—

Excellent, I shall look at holiday cottages ASAP!

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Starβ€’ in reply toHectorsDad

Is the main heart hospital the Royal Bournemouth?

HectorsDad profile image
HectorsDadβ€’ in reply toMichaelJH

Yes. But there is also a heart centre in DCH, Dorchester, so care is split between them. There are strong links to Southampton too when more major surgery is needed. I’ve tested Dorchester and Bournemouth personally (under blue lightsπŸ€ͺ).

Prada47 profile image
Prada47β€’ in reply toHectorsDad

I can second that Dorset Cardiac care is very very good. Royal Bournemouth is Great been there for Stents and an A & E admission for Bradycardia. Poole is my Heart Failure hospital. Lived in Dorset now for almost 2 years do wish we had come here sooner. Lezzers my wife and myself would like to meet should you come close to Bournemouth.

Tasting update - well I got the tonic open. At gin 33%/tonic 66% I did not enjoy it - far better at 50/50 but not ideal. The tonic was Fever Tree low calorie. I need to check out other tonics but have to avoid most because of the sugar content (diabetes). Rest day today!

jimmyq profile image
jimmyqβ€’ in reply toMichaelJH

My mrs has the Fever Tree Mediterranean in her gin, with frozen berries (instead of ice cubes - tastier).

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply tojimmyq

Completely agree & you've just reminded me I have some frozen berries in the freezer. Need to empty the freezer anyway!!

jimmyq profile image
jimmyqβ€’ in reply toLezzers

The gin bottle needs emptying as well.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply tojimmyq

That's my weekend sorted then!

MichaelJH profile image

My bottle may last longer unless the Mediterranean tonic does the trick (if I can source it). 😐

Sounds like alcoholic fruit salad! I once had fruit salad in white wine in a restaurant - quite tasty just a little sweet!

Thanks, felt depressed this afternoon. Looks like you know how to cheer people up somehow. Feel fed up with my workplace. 30 hours per week is enough for me, don't want any more hours, as just can't cope with more. My legs ache as well.... having a little bit of white wine now, not going any where.

Dreading work on Saturday as they are busiest in restaurant kitchens. Wished my kids would live closer. Its tough at times πŸ™„πŸ˜₯

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

Sorry to hear you're feeling depressed, good to hear this thread has cheered you up though. I don't know what your occupation is or your medical condition but could you perhaps ask your employer to make allowances for you, I'm no expert but thought employers had to do that these days. If your kids are too far away to visit often, maybe you could Skype them?

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toLezzers

I am a kitchen porter, had heart attack in February, after recovery eased back into work after Easter. Sorry just felt fed up. Had lots on my plate the last few months and it all felt stressful. Live on my own and when I am not working feel a bit isolated. But I also need to rest as i still get very tired from my shifts.

My kids have been great, but have also work and family commitments. It isn't easy with small children and juggling work. Such is life. We do ring each other on WhatsApp... i need to get out and about more when off work.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

February is not that long ago, it can take months to, physically & mentally, get over a heart attack. Are there any support groups in your area you could join to help you feel less isolated?

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toLezzers

Not sure, if there are, more likely 13 miles away. But i have a look about that.

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toLezzers

But not travelling 13 miles as that is too far for me just for a couple of hours. Depending on my shifts as well, its hard when you get shifts on Saturday or Sunday for the next week. Planning goes out the window Lezzer.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

I totally get not wanting to travel, is 13 miles a long distance? Where I live just about everything is a minimum of 20 miles away!! You could ask at your surgery or local hospital where your nearest support group is. Also, sometimes the local paper tells you what groups are meeting, where & when etc. When my husband haf his HA, he was very depressed for many months, it really helped him to be with people who totally understood what he was going through.

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toLezzers

Yes you right, its hard to make people understand who haven't experienced a heart attack. It turns your life upside down in an instant.

I had 2 stents in one artery and 3 weeks later another stent, thats when my leg problem started, so couldn't manage rehab as found it painful to walk outside or may be treadmill. It took a few weeks to slowly get a bit better, but after my shifts they feel heavy and aching. But can't survive on sick pay, so have to work.... I am a 62 year old lady and wished could retire now. Feel so tired most of the time.

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

Were you offered re-hab after your HA or counselling? If not ask your GP about them.

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toLezzers

Rehab yes, but found it hard to walk without pain. So Rehab never happened properly. Had some follow ups with Cardiac Nurse from Harrogate and Rehab would have been in Harrogate District Hospital which is 14 miles away. It would have costs me petrol and parking money, which wasn't abundant after my heart attack Lezzer. Should have opted for Ripon, where I live. X

Lezzers profile image
Lezzersβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

What bout counselling, you may find that beneficial.

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Starβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

I recall you had some none too good Doppler results. Have you had s diagnosis of PAD? I found the anti-anginal isosorbide mononitrate reduced cramp/leg pain associated with PAD.

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toMichaelJH

Yes there weren't so good, and have a 13 cm femoral artery blockage in my left leg, but it is being by passed by new arteries i was told Michael. Its still hard to be on your legs for 8 hour shifts and don't always get a good 30 mins break especially working on a close shift until nearly 11 pm. My car was a write off...that took 4 month to sort out... and walking to the bus, shopping is hard, as its pavement and uphill or slanted, but its getting better. Got no problem on even floor, just need to rest my legs during work. Could cry that my health is so down the hill... x

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toMichaelJH

Is that cream or medication Michael??? Just not so familiar with different medications for heart and vascular disease x

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Starβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

It is a medication - it helps prevent angina but also relieves the symptoms of PAD.

Snowdrops_17 profile image
Snowdrops_17β€’ in reply toMichaelJH

Take Bisoprolol, Aspirin, Ticagrelor, Ramipril, Atorvastatin...but looking this other medication up now. Thank you Michael x

MichaelJH profile image
MichaelJHHeart Starβ€’ in reply toSnowdrops_17

Isosorbide mononitrate works in the background in a similar way to a GTN spray. If prescribed a reduction in the Ramipril dose may be required to prevent hypotension.

I see on the news that they are now producing vodka in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Atomik! Maybe gin or whisky will be next. Couple of shots to relax one before a nuclear scan maybe? ☒️
